Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent River Run

The Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent River Run begins at 555 Riverview Drive in Chatham, Ontario, on a Sunday morning in September. Runners depart at 8:00 a.m. EDT. This community race, held regardless of weather, offers three distances: a 5K run/walk, a 10K run, and a 21.1K half marathon. The route traces the Thames River, with half marathon participants finishing a river loop. The event accommodates both walkers and runners, with WRACE managing the timing. The race generates funds for Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent, supporting affordable home construction for local families. The broader Habitat organization established its presence in Canada in 1985 with its initial build in Winkler, Manitoba, and Habitat Canada now operates through affiliates in every province and territory.

Shore 2 Shore

Shore 2 Shore is a cycling event based in Lakeshore, Ontario, with routes through Windsor/Essex and Chatham/Kent. Participants select approximately 60 km or 120 km routes. Solo entries are offered for both distances, while team entries are restricted to the 120 km route. Teams consist of 5 to 10 riders. The outcome is determined by finish time, not average speed, as the event seeks to have solo riders and teams finish within a narrow time frame. Both routes are approximately 30% gravel, making them suitable for road bikes and gravel bikes. Tires ranging from 28c to 35c are advised for optimal performance. Participants receive GPX files for navigation and are expected to be largely self-sufficient. An aid station is available, and riders may send items to it from check-in. The day features Red Lantern Coffee Co. prior to the ride, with food and beverages provided afterward. Pledge incentives and raffle prizes are included, and all funds raised benefit Youth Mental Health Services in Windsor/Essex.

St. Clair River Run

The St. Clair River Run guides runners toward Port Lambton, Ontario. The longer routes begin in small riverside communities along the St. Clair River. This annual race, now in its third year, starts on a Saturday morning in late May and offers five distances: a half marathon, 10K, 5K run/walk, 2.5K run/walk, and a Kid’s Minnow Run. The half marathon starts in south Courtright, the 10K begins north of Sombra, and the 5K starts just south of Sombra. The 2.5K takes place entirely within Port Lambton. Buses transport runners to the point-to-point start locations. Each start line features an organized warm-up. The finish area provides medals for the main distances, ribbons for the children's run, live music, posted results, and an awards ceremony. The event attracts a mid-sized field of over 500 participants and depends on local sponsors and volunteers.

About cycling & running in Chatham

Chatham-Kent Training Notes

Running: Chatham runners keep a simple loop book. The main loop is 104 km and climbs 13m, so it works for steady Z2 or clean intervals. The second loop is 102 km and gains 14m, so it fits base miles without drama. Kingston Park might be your best bet for a hill. Wilson's Conservation Area has a hill that works for sprints. Rondeau Park gives runners trails and paved roads. Mitchell's Bay and Erieau can give you up to 5k along the lakes. The Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent River Run is the anchor event, with 5K for CTCK and Jordan's Run the Runway 5K Series close behind.

Cycling: Chatham-Kent riders get flat, open kilometres and plenty of gravel. Loop a 6-mile circuit a few times and you've got a 50-mile day with a refueling stop in Merlin. 0 miles. Erie Shore Rd, Moraviantown, Wallaceburg, Dresden, Blenheim, and Ridgetown all make good ride targets. The Essex Region Conservation Bike Tour 2026 gives cyclists a named target. Kingston Park and Wilson's Conservation Area are where the climbs are, such as they are. The brief names no cycling clubs, so locals build rides around routes, crit fitness, gran fondo pacing, and cyclocross grit.

Season: June, July, August, and September are the best months for both sports. Summer gives Chatham-Kent warm to hot, humid days, so locals start early, ride Lake Erie or Lake St. Clair air when they can, and keep intervals honest. Heat waves can push sessions toward shorter loops, shaded park miles, or steady Z2 instead of hero workouts. Winter brings cold, snowy weather, and occasional cold snaps change the whole rhythm. Runners stay on road routes like Downtown To Mud Creek or Mud And Indian Creek when footing is clean. Cyclists swap long gravel days for careful base miles, protected spins, or cyclocross-style handling when conditions allow.
