Rainbow Bridge Run

The Rainbow Bridge Run is a 5 km and 10 km walk/run held in June at Event Centre Northeast River Valley Park in Edmonton, Alberta. It is open to all ages and ability levels. Children ages 0-5 participate for free; all participants must register and complete an online waiver. Leashed dogs are welcome. The event honors deceased pets and raises money for the Rainbow Bridge Animal Angel Foundation. Proceeds support chronically ill and vulnerable animals, providing emergency vet care for families facing financial hardship, medical testing, medications, prescription diets, mobility aids, behavioral training, grooming, and other support to help keep pets with their families.

Run for Home

Run for Home is an annual autumn race day held at Emily Murphy Park in Edmonton, Alberta. Participants can choose from a 1 km walk/run, a 5 km walk/run, or a 10 km run, accommodating preferences from short family outings to longer runs. The event begins in the afternoon and is designed for diverse groups, welcoming families, strollers, and dogs alongside more competitive runners. The race benefits Edmonton’s inner-city housing initiatives, with funds directed to The Affordable Housing Sustainability Fund. Additionally, it gathers essential donations such as shoes, toques, and mitts for hospital patients upon their discharge. Post-race amenities include snacks, prizes, swag bags, and a bouncy castle, contributing to its atmosphere as a community fundraiser rather than a typical road race.

Edmonton Ice Cream Run

The Edmonton Ice Cream Run begins and ends at Kinsmen Park Picnic Site 1 on Walterdale Hill in Edmonton. This Saturday morning event in July offers 5K and 10K options for runners and walkers, alongside a Little Ice Cream Scoops kids' run. Virtual 5K, 10K, and 1K kids' run options are also available, allowing participants to complete the distance on their own schedule. The event is organized as a community run suitable for families, rather than a competition solely for elite athletes. The registered field includes just over 300 participants, and the race supports the Mountain Gorilla Conservation Society of Canada. Virtual participants receive packet shipping and result-submission instructions via email. In-person participants gather at Kinsmen Park for a short run or walk with an ice-cream theme and a children's option.

About cycling & running in Edmonton

Edmonton River Valley Training

Running: Locals run the North Saskatchewan River Valley first, because the river puts a heart down the centre of the city. Mill Creek Ravine, Terwillegar Park, Kinsmen Park, Rundle Park, Gold Bar Park, and the River Valley Loop handle easy Z2, intervals, and long base miles without much fuss. Edmonton Trail Runners bring the singletrack crowd together, and Edmonton Road and Track Club gives road runners a steady crew. Servus Edmonton Marathon is the big anchor, with TRAC Community Run/Walk, La French Run Edmonton, Moose Is Loose, and The Popcorn Run Edmonton filling the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride the same valley network, then stretch it into the Edmonton-Fort Saskatchewan Trail, Mill Creek Ravine, Capilano Park, Gold Bar Park, Rundle Park, and Terwillegar Park. Edmonton Bicycle and Touring Club schedules around 200 rides, from 20 km cruises to workouts over 100 km, and Edmonton Road and Track Club adds weekly rides, social events, and velodrome access. The typical loop covers 1 km and gains 317 m. The climbs sit up to McNally School, south from Capilano bridge toward 106 Ave, and in Rundle Park up to Ada Blvd.

Season: Cyclists get the cleanest season from May to mid-October, with April sometimes working and March staying sketchy on a road bike. Runners get prime months in September and October, when the ravines feel quick and the paths settle down. Summer brings warm sunny days from June to early September, and July usually runs from 13°C to 23°C with 17+ hours of daylight near solstice. Winter changes the game for both sports, because cold dry months run November to March and January usually sits between -15°C and -5°C. Studded tires keep riding alive, and downtown bike lanes get priority snow plowing.
