Annual Stewart McKelvey Fredericton Marathon Race Weekend

The Stewart McKelvey Fredericton Marathon Race Weekend begins and ends at Queen Square in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Runners cross the Saint John River approximately 1.5 km into the course. This event is an annual road race held in mid-May and stands as New Brunswick's oldest annual marathon, with origins dating back to 1979. The primary marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifier. The weekend also includes a half marathon, a 10K, a 5K, youth runs (1 km or 3 km) for ages 5 to 14, and a 5K student challenge for high school participants. The Capital City Road Runners, a local running club, hosts the event. The course consists of paved and gravel trails alongside the Nashwaak River. Turnarounds are used to segment the different race distances. 5K participants return shortly after the river crossing, 10K runners turn around in Marysville, and half marathon and marathon runners proceed to approximately 10.25 km before turning back. Half marathoners complete one loop, while marathoners run the loop twice. The race attracts individuals aiming for Boston qualifying times, alongside local club runners, students, children, and participants in shorter races. Canadian Running Magazine noted Fredericton as having the highest rate of Boston qualifying performances in Canada and subsequently named it the “Best Boston Qualifier.” Fredericton has also participated in New Brunswick race challenges, where medals from various events can be combined to form larger Tri-City or New Brunswick Challenge medallions.

Mactaquac Trail Race

The Mactaquac Trail Race begins at Beaver Pond within Mactaquac Provincial Park, New Brunswick, offering 10K and 20K distances on a shared trail loop. The 10K consists of one loop, while the 20K uses two, allowing participants to select a shorter park race or a longer trail run. This fall event maintains a low-key atmosphere: the entry fee is modest, and organizers focus on draw prizes and a relaxed post-race gathering rather than shirts or medals. The course features both singletrack and doubletrack sections. The terrain is moderately rolling, with little flat running. Runners will cross a stream twice and navigate several bridges, needing to be mindful of slippery sections and exposed roots. A course map is not provided; however, organizers announce pre-race reconnaissance runs via the race Facebook page for those wishing to preview the route. The race is nearly cup-less, requiring participants to provide their own hydration vessels for water stations. Post-race amenities include food, drinks, awards, draw prizes, and massages offered by Eastern College massage therapy students. A free kids run takes place the day before the main event, with on-site registration.

About cycling & running in Fredericton

Fredericton Training Notes

Running: Fredericton runners build easy base miles on the Fredericton trail system along the Saint John River and Wolastoq. Odell Park main trails give locals softer footing when the legs need a break from pavement. Capital City Road Runners keeps the scene steady with Thursday 5:30 pm and Saturday 8:30 am runs from UNB Currie Centre. Club runs usually follow the trail system, and the average outing sits around 10K. The Fredericton Marathon Race Weekend has one of Freddy’s best race day vibes. The 43rd Fredericton Fall Classic, Flyin Feet Five Miler, Kicking PancreAS™ 5K, and Mactaquac Trail Race keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Fredericton riders split time between paved inner-city trails, gravel wheels, and rolling country roads. River Valley Cycling anchors the local scene, and the Radical Edge Wednesday group ride gives roadies a regular roll. Explore Velo runs weekly rides that are mostly gravel, which fits the local trail mix. The route runs 4 km and climbs 186 m, so it works for steady Z2. The Regent hill route runs 4 km and gains 966 m. Regent hill brings the brutal climbing bite, while the Fredericton to Mactaquac Loop gives punchy climbs after river-side gravel.

Season: July and August give Fredericton the best riding and running months, with short, warm summers and enough humidity to make intervals feel real. Locals use summer for gran fondo prep, Gravel Grind Fredericton, long trail runs, and steady base miles beside the river. Winter changes the whole rhythm, because paved trail sections are plowed while Odell Park and Killarney Lake Park shift toward groomed routes for skiers, snowshoers, and walkers. Mid November through April or May makes a bicycle the wrong tool most days, so runners stay on cleared paths and cyclists wait for better roads or move indoors.
