Across the Lake Swim Kelowna

The Across the Lake Swim Kelowna challenges swimmers to cross Okanagan Lake. The event takes place in Kelowna, British Columbia, at City Park on Abbott Street. It is a summer open-water swim offering a classic 2.1 km main distance, a shorter 1.5 km option, and a Kids Shore Splash of 25 or 50 metres for children aged 5 to 12 in shallow water. The swim originated in 1949, serving as a rite of passage for local swim clubs and as part of the Kelowna Regatta. Today, it attracts advanced racers, families, friends, youth, seniors, and first-time open-water swimmers. The competitive 2.1 km wave starts earlier as a group and does not permit support paddlers. Registration covers five weeks of Fresh Air Open Water Swim Clinics prior to the event, transport to the start line, an event cap, finish-line food, insurance, and awards.

Argus Apple Triathlon

The Argus Apple Triathlon takes place over a weekend in Kelowna, British Columbia, starting at Kelowna City Park on Okanagan Lake. Competitors begin with an open-water swim in the lake, followed by a bike course through city streets and nearby wine country, concluding with a run along the waterfront. The standard-distance event includes a 1500m swim, 40km bike, and 10km run, featuring two laps for both the bike and run segments. Shorter distances are available: a sprint race (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run) and a super sprint (300m swim, 10km bike, 2.5km run). A standard aquabike option is also offered for those preferring a swim-bike format. The series accommodates various participant levels. Children's age-group races have distances from a 100m swim and 650m run for the youngest to a 300m swim, 10km bike, and 2.5km run for ages 12-15. Junior elite athletes aged 14-23 compete in a draft-legal super sprint as part of the BC SuperSeries. The standard, standard aquabike, and sprint races also function as Triathlon Canada Age Group National Championships, requiring no prior qualification. Package pickup and bike check-in occur on Saturday for the main adult events, with the majority of racing scheduled for Sunday.

Dirty Feet Trail Run - Race 2 - Kelowna, B.C.

The Dirty Feet Trail Run Race 2 is a trail event in Kelowna, British Columbia, part of the Dirty Feet Trail Races series. It takes place at the Myra Bellevue Day Use Area in Crawford. Participants can select from approximately 5 km, 10 km, or 21 km distances. The longest race begins in the morning, followed shortly by the shorter distances. The event has a limited field, with registration capped at 300 participants, creating a local trail day atmosphere rather than a large road-race production. The course utilizes the Myra Bellevue area for all three distances, offering a short trail outing, a middle-distance run, and a half-marathon route. The series is open to all ages, and the participant list indicates a social but not overcrowded mix. Advance registration is required, as race-day sign-up is not available. The event includes typical Dirty Feet elements: sponsor prizes, snacks, and organization by Phil Hiom.

About cycling & running in Kelowna

Kelowna Training Notes

Running: Locals run the lake, the creek, and Knox when they want honest work. Mission Creek Greenway gives runners roughly 16 km of wide crushed gravel for Z2, progression runs, and long steady days. Mission Creek Greenway gives you 6 km and 75 m of gain into an easy downtown hit with water views. Knox Mountain Apex Trail brings the hill work, and Paul’s Tomb trail gives 5 km with 125 m of gain. Kelowna Running Club owns the weekly rhythm. Okanagan parkrun meets Saturdays at 9:00 AM at Parkinson Recreation Centre. Breakfast Club rolls Saturdays at 7:00 AM for 12K from downtown to Gyro Beach and back. Anchor races include 2026 Kelowna Wine Country Runs, KRC Midsummer 8K 2026, Wandering Moose 12k, 25k, 35k, and Argus Apple Marathon.

Cycling: Locals ride a proper mix here, with over 300 km of bike lanes and more than 60 km of separated pathways. Kelowna Waterfront Trail, Mission Creek Greenway, and the Rail Trail Ride handle easy base miles. Kettle Valley Rail Trail in Myra Canyon gives a 24 km tour across 18 trestles and through 2 tunnels. Crawford network and Rose Valley bring Okanagan singletrack when the road legs need a break. Tempo Cycling Club sets the tone with the Wednesday Night Ride from Pandosy Waterfront Park at 5:30 PM. WNR runs 50-60 km, with A group at 29-30 km/h and B group at 27 km/h. Climbs sit around Knox Mountain, Black Mountain, Little White Forest Service Road, Glenmore Highlands, Big White, and East Kelowna. The 2025 CMHA Ride Don't Hide | Payton & Dillon Budd Memorial Ride is the anchor ride.

Season: Spring to fall works best for both sports, and the city gives you a long training runway before winter tightens things up. Summer brings dry, hot, sunny days, and the concrete here gets hot fast. Locals start early because the views of the water are great, and the breeze off the lake is exactly what you need on a sweaty July morning. Crawford network stays noticeably cooler than the valley floor, which helps on trail days. Myra Canyon Bike Rentals operates through October, so the KVR keeps pulling riders late into the season. Winter turns cool and cloudy, especially in December and January. Runners keep using paved paths and Greenway options, while riders shift toward lights, fat bike trails at Big White, and steadier Z2.
