Royal Road Race

The Royal Road Race is a running event in Regina, Saskatchewan, held on Mother's Day weekend, with races taking place inside Canada's RCMP Training Academy. The event features multiple races: a 10K, a 5K, a 3K Family Run, and a 1K Mini Mountie for young children. The unique setting is a key feature, as runners access the national RCMP training campus instead of solely using city streets. Participants include families, children, and competitive runners. The 5K also functions as a Saskatchewan provincial road championship for junior, senior, and masters categories. Post-race traditions involve medals, breakfast, and Hillberg & Berk gifts for participants in the longer races. Fundraising benefits Regina school food programs and initiatives to support children's race participation.

Canada Goose Ultra

The Canada Goose Ultra takes place alongside Wascana Lake in Saskatchewan, offering 6-hour, 12-hour, and 24-hour race durations on a consistent, flat, paved loop. The structure is straightforward: participants complete 4 km laps for the duration of their chosen event, with the start and finish lines located at the Marina Parking Lot in Wascana Park. This event holds the distinction of being Saskatchewan's sole 24-hour run, yet its shorter race options provide accessibility. The 6-hour race serves as a low-pressure introduction to ultra running, while the 12-hour race is suitable for those aiming for a specific distance or seeking to extend their time on their feet. The course winds around Wascana Lake within an urban park setting. The repetitive nature of the loop allows runners to pass their personal aid stations, supporters, and the race hub multiple times. The event operates primarily on a self-supported model, featuring a basic aid station, limited first-aid provisions, and designated space near the start/finish area for personal gear, including chairs, coolers, food, beverages, and family support. All participants who finish at least one lap receive a custom medal. Runners surpassing their previous longest distance are awarded a custom swag item, and those achieving 100 km earn a belt buckle. Throughout the 24-hour race, pizza is served on two occasions, aligning with the event's practical, continuous-lap format.

Run/Walk/Ruck for Mental Wellness

The Run/Walk/Ruck for Mental Wellness is a June event held at the Canada Games Athletic Complex on McDonald Street in Regina, Saskatchewan. Participants can choose from 5K, 15K, and 21.1K distances. The half marathon, 15K, and 5K races will have staggered starts in the morning. Participants can register for in-person participation with chip timing or complete the distances virtually if unable to attend in Regina. The race supports fundraising for local mental health initiatives, including the Canadian Mental Health Association - Regina Branch. In-person registration includes access to the virtual races, while virtual registration is limited to online participation. Each entry includes a locally designed short-sleeve technical shirt, a locally designed finisher medal, and complimentary professional race photos. The event combines the spirit of a community fundraiser with a competitive race day.

About cycling & running in Regina

Regina Training Notes

Running: Regina gives runners more than the map suggests. Wascana Center and Wascana Lake carry the everyday loops, and locals use Wascana Park for Z2, intervals, and easy laps when the legs feel cooked. Devonian Pathway Parks and the River Tour stretch the run out, while Normanview, the Northside, and the East Side keep base miles close to home. Most routes give you 2 km with 15 m of gain. Queen City Marathon, I Love Regina Run & Walk, and Canada Day Run & Walk anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Regina riders work with the prairie and get plenty out of it. Wascana Lake paths suit easy spins, lazy laps, and recovery rides, while Seven Bridges Road, Shop Gravel Loop, Lumsden Loop, and Regina Bypass 100 handle the bigger days. Western Cycle, Western Cycle ride club, Bike Regina, and Regina Cycle Club keep the scene moving. Regina Cycle Club brings road, gravel, and cyclocross, plus Tuesday Night Races and Thursday Adventure Rides. Qu'Appelle Valley holds the real climbing, and the 2023 RCC Roubaix packs 1555 ft of gain into 39.7 miles.

Season: Spring and summer are the best months, and Regina feels built around park miles once the trees fill in. The city planners planted more than 300,000 trees, and Wascana Center gives runners and riders shade, water, and a central place to meet. Summer training means longer Z2 rides, lake loops before work, and prairie sunsets after a crit or group ride. Winter changes the gear, not the habit. Runners keep using the paths when they can, and riders move toward the Wascana Fat Bike Loop, Wakamow Valley Trails, and snow cruises with the fat biking scene.
