Trail du Mont Saint Michel

Trail du Mont Saint Michel is a mid-April trail race held in Chambéry, Savoie, within France’s Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. It features three single-loop distances: 10 km, 17 km, and 27 km. The short route provides a manageable loop for newer trail runners. The 17 km course involves an 800-meter climb, and the 27 km course includes a 1,600-meter climb, presenting these longer options as significant mountain challenges rather than simple park runs. The race crosses natural, mountainous, and forested terrain surrounding Chambéry, allowing participants to explore a portion of the Savoie region on foot. The event caters to both beginners and experienced trail runners, with the distance options clearly reflecting this. Although named after Mont Saint-Michel, the race is located in Chambéry, distinct from the well-known Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy, famous for its tidal bay, abbey, and statue of Saint Michael.

About cycling & running in Chambéry

Chambéry Training Notes

Running: Locals run Chambéry like a mountain town with a flat escape hatch. The Voie Verte sits 2 km from the city centre, and it gives you car-free base miles toward Lac du Bourget or Combe de Savoie. The Monts de Chambéry loop gives 5 to 6 km when you want a quick hill hit. The Chemin Fontaine Saint-Martin steps throw you straight into the action. Entente Athlétique Chambéry brings the club scene, with 680 members from recreational running to track competition. Odysséa Chambéry, La Chambérienne, Trail du Mont Saint Michel, and the 10 km de Chambéry keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Locals ride from Chambéry with climbs sitting on every edge of the valley. The north points to Lac du Bourget, the south points to Mont Granier, the east rises into the Massif des Bauges, and the west hits the Chaîne de l'Épine. The Voie Verte works for Z2 days, while the three cycling routes from Chambéry go northbound, southbound, and toward Challes-les-Eaux through lakes, vineyards, and villages. Chambéry Cyclisme Compétition brings road, track cycling, cyclocross, and MTB. The Grand Prix de Chambéry, Grand Prix de Vimines, Jeux Cyclistes et Sprints, and Cyclo-Cross des Monts are the anchor events.

Season: Spring and autumn suit Chambéry best, because the valley is easy and the massifs are ready for longer work. Summer gets quite hot, so locals move early for intervals, stack Z2 on the Voie Verte, or climb toward the Bauges and Chartreuse when the city centre feels heavy. Winter changes the rhythm for both sports. The city sits around 250 m, but frequent nights below freezing make roads, trails, and descents sharper, so runners lean on the valley and cyclists pick their windows before chasing higher routes toward Croix du Nivolet, Pointe de la Gorgeat, or Mont Granier.
