BMW Berlin Marathon

The BMW Berlin Marathon covers 42.195 km through Berlin, held annually since 1974 when it started as the Berliner Volksmarathon. It is Germany's largest marathon by participation and a World Marathon Major. The event spans a full weekend: inline skaters compete on Saturday, students run a mini-marathon over the final 4.2195 km of the main course, and the Sunday marathon features runners, wheelchair athletes, and handbikers. Berlin's course is notably fast, with top male and female runners achieving quicker average times than on other marathon courses. Thirteen official IAAF world records have been set here, attracting elite runners seeking records alongside thousands of club runners and first-timers. The race originated from West Berlin's running community: Horst Milde assisted in organizing early cross-country races at Teufelsberg before initiating the first Volksmarathon, recognizing demand for a full-distance race among everyday runners. The inaugural event commenced at Mommsenstadion, following a route through Grunewald near the AVUS towards Strandbad Wannsee.

About cycling & running in Berlin

Berlin Base Miles And Brandenburg Dirt

Running: Locals keep running simple: Tiergarten for gravel laps, Grunewald for forest roads, Kreuzberg and Treptower Park for a 7km city loop, and the Mauerweg when marathon training needs space. The city centre gives you the Castle tour along the Spree, a 6k route starting at the Federal Chancellery / Tipi tent, and the 10k Sightseeing loop from the same spot. Sbahnhof Südkreuz gives you a clean line to Gleisdreieck park for 18-20km without street crossings. Adidas Runners, Berlin Frontrunners, PACE, and ParkRun cover most moods. The BMW Berlin Marathon, Berlin Half Marathon, S25 Berlin, and Adidas City Runners Night anchor the year.

Cycling: Locals ride out of Berlin fast, because Brandenburg starts feeling open after 30-45 minutes. Kronprinzinnenweg at Grunewald S-Bahn station is the classic meet point, and Standert Bicycles keeps the group-ride energy sharp. The Havel Cycle Route runs around 370 kilometers through Brandenburg an der Havel and Potsdam, and the Oder-Spree-Tour makes a 278-kilometre loop through Frankfurt (Oder), Beeskow, and Fürstenwalde. The Berlin-Copenhagen Radweg gives you fully paved base miles north. The Lost-in-Brandenburg Loop runs 259km, stays 65% unpaved, and turns 10% singletrack. Teufelsberg, Drachenberg park, Dreilinden, and the Oderbruch hold the climbing, with elevation reaching 158 meters.

Season: April gets busy with the Berlin Half Marathon, and autumn gets the clearest local nod for long Z2 rides in Brandenburg. The leaves change colours, the temperatures drop fast, and the bike paths stay mostly paved, flat, and comfortable. Summer keeps locals on the same reliable lines: Tiergarten, Schlachtensee, Grunewald, the Spree, the Havel, and the lakeside paths when intervals feel too boxed in. Cyclists use Brandenburg for base miles, gravel, and gran fondo legs. Winter moves both sports into steadier habits, and the free 4km run from the Brandenburg Gate starts New Year's Day at 12 noon.
