Rund um Köln

Rund um Köln is a one-day road cycling race held in Cologne, typically taking place on the second Sunday in June since 2015, having previously been scheduled for Easter Monday. The race covers approximately 200 km, begins in the Rheinauhafen, and is classified as a UCI Europe Tour event at category 1.1. Its origins trace back to 1908, establishing it as the oldest continuously held German road race. The course crosses Cologne and the adjacent Rhineland, featuring long straight sections, short ascents, and a challenging cobbled climb leading to Bensberg Castle. Since the 1980s, the route has extended across the Rhine into the Bergisches Land, deviating from earlier paths that often followed the left bank toward the Eifel. Primarily an amateur event for a significant portion of the mid-20th century, it was reopened to professionals in 1990. Jan Ullrich garnered considerable attention for his solo victory in 2003 following a doping suspension. The event also features shorter, organized rides known as Velodom, allowing amateur cyclists to participate in a similar race-day atmosphere.

53. Forsbach-Tour des Rtc Köln e.V

The Forsbach Tour, organized by Rtc Köln e.V., is a road cycling RTF that begins and ends at Schulzentrum Zündorf on Heerstraße in Köln-Zündorf. Participants can select from five distances: 51, 78, 118, 159, or 212 km. The shortest route includes approximately 480 meters of climbing, and the 212 km route features around 3,000 meters of elevation gain, indicating it is a challenging ride. Departures are staggered throughout the morning, with the longest route starting first. The finish control closes at 18:00. The routes are managed in a typical club-riding manner, with GPX files and Komoot links supplied. Riders are advised to download tracks close to the event date due to potential route adjustments. The 51, 78, and 118 km routes are marked, while the 159 km and longer routes have signs only at potentially confusing junctions, making navigation more critical for extended distances. The event commences with a brief breakfast period before the initial departures. The organizer provides some additional benefits, such as gift-filled drawstring bags (subject to availability) and a lottery for those who register online early.

It attracts a moderate number of participants, typically between 1,001 and 3,000, positioning it between a small club event and a large city marathon weekend. Registration is available via the organizer’s website, with race details including start lists, participant lists, and published results.

About cycling & running in Cologne

Köln Training Notes

Running: Locals run the Rhine, the Innerer Grüngürtel, the Äußere Grüngürtel, Aachener Weiher, Stadtgarten, Volksgarten, and Beethovenpark when the week needs easy Z2. The loop runs 0 km, and kicks hard at Herkulesberg before Mediapark and the cathedral spires show up. RUN FOR LOVE meets every Monday at 7 pm at Zappes Süd, UNITYRUNCOLOGNE brings the 8 km vibe, and Cologne Running Crew owns Wednesdays. The Generali Köln Marathon, Kölner Halbmarathon, Stadionlauf Köln, B2Run Köln, and Lauf Rund um den Fühlinger See are the anchor races.

Cycling: Locals ride the Rhein, Dürener Straße, Rodenkirchen, Lindenthal, Ehrenfeld, Venloer Straße, and Deutz for steady base miles and city legs. rtc Köln e.V 1972 gives the road crowd a proper club name, and the 53. Forsbach-Tour des Rtc Köln e.V 1972 sits nicely beside Rund um Köln as an anchor event. The climbs live more in short punches than alpine drama. Herkulesberg gives the Grüngürtel-Runde its sting, and Monte Troodelöh marks the city high point at 134 m. The west side through Dürener Straße and Lindenthal works for intervals when you want urban_dense rhythm.

Season: July is the best month here, and locals use the long light for river runs, crit legs, gran fondo prep, and relaxed Sunday Long Run laps by the water. Average highs hit 25°C, so the inner neighborhoods can feel properly warm after dark. Summer showers and thunderstorms keep the green belt fresh, and the city still turns out, typisch Köln eben. Winter lows average 3°C, but snow or ice stays rare, so runners and cyclists keep the Z2 habit alive.
