The Etna Marathon MTB begins in Milo, eastern Sicily, leading participants up Mount Etna, Europe's tallest active volcano. This off-road marathon offers three routes: a 63.5 km Marathon with 2,100 meters of elevation gain, a 45 km Gran Fondo with 1,550 meters of climbing, and an E-Bike category following the 45 km course. The event is limited to 1,000 participants. The course itself is the defining element: volcanic terrain, extended ascents, and significant altitude gain present a challenge even before the distance is factored in. As part of the UCI MTB Marathon Series, the event attracts competitive marathon riders alongside amateurs participating in the Gran Fondo or E-Bike categories. ASD Mongibello MTB Team is the organizer, with registration available online and in Milo prior to the race weekend.
La Mezza dello Stretto is a competitive half marathon held in Messina, Sicily, covering the standard 21.0975 km distance. Scheduled for a Sunday in October, it is presented as a run through the heart of the Mediterranean, closely linked to Messina and the Strait area, distinct from a generic city course. Specific route details are not provided, leaving the half-marathon distance as the firm course fact, rather than named streets or landmarks. The event is organized by ME591 Responsabile Santi Giacobbe. The surrounding calendar offers runners various other formats, including 5 km and 10 km races, marathons, ultras, trail races, sky races, vertical races, and stage events.
Running: Locals run the Lungomare Falcomatà when they want sea air, flat rhythm, and Sicily sitting across the water doing its own thing. The Lungomare Falcomatà gives you 1700 meters for easy Z2, 500-meter intervals, and steady laps before the city wakes up. The city centre keeps running simple because no named run club session is listed here. I La Mezza dello Stretto gives the area its half-marathon anchor, and the race covers 21.0975 km. X 10 km di Capo Peloro - Trofeo Luigi Cacopardi also sits close enough to keep sharp legs honest.
Cycling: Locals ride out of Reggio when they want climbing fast, because Aspromonte rises right behind the coast. Via XXIV Maggio, Reggio Calabria to Pantano, Cardeto climbs 875 m in 22 km, so nobody calls that a coffee spin. Another route covers 6 km and gains 1,566 m, which is proper gran fondo work. A third route covers 2 km and gains 943 m for base miles with bite. Etna Marathon Mtb and Granfondo Giro dell'Etna give riders the bigger anchor dates.
Season: April and May suit Reggio best, and locals use those months before the heat starts bossing the day. Summer mornings can feel wild already at 8 AM, so the city centre gets the early Z2 crowd and the Lungomare gets quick sessions before breakfast. Aspromonte stays useful when road legs need shade, climbing, or a cyclocross and singletrack mood near Aspromonte National Park. Winter changes the feel more than the map, and locals lean on the coast for steady running while riders pick calmer windows for the climbs.
