About cycling & running in TrondheimTrondheim Base Miles
Running: Locals run the Nidelva River trail when they want flatter miles close to the city centre. Bymarka and Estenstadmarka handle easy trail days, base miles, and steady Z2 without much fuss. Gråkallen gives trail runners technical sections and steep climbs, and the summit reaches 555 m. Trondheim Runners keeps things social through free runs on Facebook, and Klæbu løpeklubbs adds more local race rhythm. Baneløp keeps the sharp stuff on the Dalgård track over 1-3 km. Terrengløp Ferista, Terrengkarusellen Trondheim, Terrengløp Nilsbyen, BDO-mila, and Trondheim Marathon give the city proper anchor events.
Cycling: Locals ride plenty, but most people cycle alone or with one or two friends. Trondheim has 1,283 cycle routes, so road, gravel, MTB, and cyclocross legs all get fed. Stiftstaden Sykkelklubb, Nidaros Sykkelklubb, CK Victoria, Trondheim Velocipedklub, and Trondheim Dawn Patrol are the names to know. Bymarka sits about 10 minutes west of Trondheim and gives mountain bikers about 80 km² of trails. National Gravel Route 1 runs 730 km from Oslo to Trondheim and arrives through Bymarka. Styrkeprøven Trondheim/Lillehammer/Eidsvoll - Oslo 2026 gives the big gran fondo target, while the climbing shows up on routes like Trondheim - Levanger and Trondheim - Skogn.
Season: May and June are the best cycling months, and runners get the same gift: dry-enough paths, long evenings, and proper training blocks. The summer solstice gives Trondheim a 03:00 sunrise and a 23:40 sunset, and locals can still see light around midnight when the sky is clear. The period from 23 May to 19 July stays light enough outdoors that no artificial lighting is needed. Winter changes the game for both sports, because Trondheim gets cold, snowy, icy, and slippery. Spiked tires become an absolute must for riding, and higher places around Bymarka hold more snow with later snowmelt.
