Azores Hybrid Race

The Azores Hybrid Race begins and ends at Portas do Mar in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Azores, during an October weekend. This fitness competition is hybrid, meaning participants run a set distance and also complete functional workout stations built to official HYROX standards. The event features 10 races, including 25 km and 50 km options, with both the single pro and single open formats covering 25 km. The format accommodates various athlete types: solo racers, doubles pairs, relay teams, and elite men and women all have categories. Rather than a straightforward point-to-point race, the day involves repeated transitions between running and gym-style exercises, with electronic timing and live results monitoring competitors. Ilhéus Impactantes - Clube organizes the event. A small local detail is the optional race T-shirt, which costs extra, with one euro from each purchase donated to the Associação Humanitária dos Bombeiros Voluntários de Ponta Delgada.

III Youth Duathlon of São José

The III Youth Duathlon of São José takes place in São José, Portugal, with a single race scheduled for June. It is sanctioned by the Federação de Triatlo de Portugal, placing it on the nation's official triathlon and duathlon competition schedule. A duathlon consists of running and cycling segments, unlike events that include swimming. This format provides a straightforward introduction for young athletes developing their multisport skills. The Portuguese racing calendar features individual and team competitions, age-group divisions, relays, national championship connections, and club series, integrating this local youth event into the sport's larger framework in Portugal.

Trail de São João da Vila

Trail de São João da Vila is a trail running event on São Miguel in the Azores, held in June near Vila Franca do Campo. Participants can choose from an 11K Mini Trail, a 20K Short Trail, a 32K Long Trail, or a walking option. All routes conclude at Praia da Vinha d’Areia, the beach in Vila Franca do Campo, bringing runners from all distances back to the same coastal finish. The routes traverse every parish within the municipality of Vila Franca do Campo, utilizing natural trails, rural paths, and technical sections instead of straightforward road loops. Clube Desportivo de Vila Franca organizes the race, providing aid stations, security, and course support. The variety of distances attracts experienced trail runners, novices, walkers, and families, with the event emphasizing local values of conviviality, personal challenge, and outdoor activity within the Azorean landscape.

About cycling & running in Ponta Delgada (Azores)

Ponta Delgada Training Notes

Running: Ponta Delgada gives runners a coastal base with quick access to proper climbing. One loop runs 63 km with 68 m of gain. Another route covers 50 km with 94 m of gain. One route runs 84 km with 467 m of gain. Another route covers 76 km and 989 m of gain. Run clubs are not named in the brief. Ultra X Azores and 7 Cities Ultimate Trail are the anchor events.

Cycling: Ponta Delgada riders get low-traffic back roads, coastal climbs, paved roads, gravel tracks, and rougher backroads. Locals point the bike up Lagoa do Fogo or along the EN-1-1A in the Western part when they want base miles with views. Sete Cidades caldera brings the crater-lake climb, and Pico de Vara brings forested gravel climbs. Furnas caldera gives sustained work without feeling like a death march. The Gravel Explorer route covers 205 km, and its days average 41 km. Cycling clubs are not named in the brief. III Youth Duathlon of São José sits on the event radar.

Season: Summer is the best block because the temps stay moderate and the islands feel built for long Z2. Locals ride early, joke about seeing 1.5 cars, and keep exploring farms, fishing villages, forests, crater lakes, tea plantations, and cliff-side roads. Runners use summer for steady trail volume, half-marathon work, and sharper climbs before anchor races. Winter changes the plan because wind and rain make both sports less smooth. Cyclists still find windows, but gravel and coastal roads ask for more patience. Runners keep the routine alive with shorter routes, controlled intervals, and climbs when the weather gives them a gap.
