About cycling & running in BlackburnBlackburn Base Miles
Running: Blackburn runners get a proper urban mix without leaving town. Witton Country Park sits 1 mile west of the town centre and gives you 480 acres of woodland, parkland and farmland for easy loops, strides, and muddy Z2. The Weavers Wheel gives you 26km around the town centre when you want a longer steady one. Blackburn RoadRunners has been around since 1986 and has about 300 members, so you will find a group pace. Locals use 5k, 10 mile, 12 mile, and half marathon training routes. Wind in the Pillows Marathons & Half marathon and Fireworks 5km sit as anchor races.
Cycling: Blackburn riders get road, gravel, canal, and rough stuff close together. Witton Country Park sits on National Cycle Route Network 6 and close to the Leeds & Liverpool canal, so locals roll out easily. Blackburn Cycling Club heads out on Sunday mornings from Whalley bus station, Ribchester car park, or Brownhill roundabout. The first Sunday brings shorter group rides from Whalley bus station, with about 4 hours and a cafe break. Scenic Gravel Loop gives you 71 km with 533m ascent, and Whalley Nab Escape gives you 42 km with 598m ascent. Buncer Lane, Green Hill, Tockholes, Black Hill, Jubilee Tower, and Rivington Pike hold the climbing.
Season: Blackburn works best when you treat it as a year-round training town. Locals make the time, then use Witton, the canal, Weavers Wheel, and the town-centre roads for base miles, intervals, and steady club nights. Summer lets the riding spread west towards the West Pennine Moors and south into rolling hills, with singletrack, gravel, and longer road loops feeling easier to stack. Winter changes the kit and the mood, but the work stays. Blackburn RoadRunners anchors the cold spell with the Winter Warmer 10K from the athletics track in Witton Park, climbing Buncer Lane and dropping through Pleasington.
