Derby Running Festival

The Kentucky Derby is a Grade I dirt race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, run annually on the first Saturday in May. The horses race 1 1/4 miles on a left-handed track. Colts and geldings carry 126 pounds, and fillies carry 121. It is the first leg of the Triple Crown, typically lasting about two minutes, hence the nickname “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.” It is the most-watched and most-attended horse race in the United States. The Derby has run since 1875, sharing deep continuity with the Kentucky Oaks; both have been held every year since their inception, even when the schedule required adjustments within a year. Col. Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. helped establish the race after studying racing in England and France. The winner is draped in a blanket of roses, earning the nickname “The Run for the Roses.” The race concludes the two-week Kentucky Derby Festival and is part of racing history with Secretariat’s record time of 1:59.4.

The Drop Nottingham

The Drop Nottingham begins at Up & Running in central Nottingham (postcode NG1 2DD), starting at 10:00 am. This is not a standard marked race. Participants hand over phones, watches, and maps, are blindfolded, board a bus, and are then dropped at an undisclosed location within Nottinghamshire. The objective is to return to the event centre on foot, relying on judgment, memory, and chosen routes after the blindfold is removed. The stated distances are 6, 10, and 15 miles as the crow flies from the drop point, meaning the actual running distance can be considerably greater. There are no course markers or directions provided. The route may involve a mix of trails, roads, and urban navigation, dictated by the drop-off point and the runner's ability to interpret the terrain.

Golden Gates Gallop

The Golden Gates Gallop is a 5-mile race held at Elvaston Cricket Club in Derby, Derbyshire, with the main start scheduled for 10:00 AM. The race commences under the Napoleonic golden gates at Elvaston Castle, directing participants onto a two-lap circuit within the castle grounds. The route incorporates the local “gallops,” a undulating section featuring consistent gradients, concluding back at the race village near the cricket club. A 2-mile fun run, suitable for families and younger participants, follows a single circuit of Elvaston Castle’s boundary path. The event also offers participants a charity fundraising component.

About cycling & running in Doncaster

Doncaster Training Notes

Running: Locals keep running simple in Doncaster, with steady laps around the lakeside area and longer lines out to Cantley, Bessacarr, Intake, Town Moor, Potteric Carr, and Wadworth. Doncaster Pacers meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:30pm, and runners arrive from 6:00pm for a chat and a warm up. Danum Harriers Running Club gives the city a serious road and trail spine, with Tuesday sessions and Thursday away runs from The Punchbowl in Thorne. Sandall Park hosts Doncaster parkrun every Saturday at 9am, and the 5km course runs 75% on grass. Golden Gates Gallop and Derby Running Festival sit well as anchor races.

Cycling: Locals ride the Trans Pennine Trail when they want Z2 base miles without overthinking the route. Doncaster sits in the Don Valley, so the city gives you flatter work first, then the west pulls you toward the Pennines when you want the climbs. The east opens toward the Humberhead Levels and Thorne and Hatfield Moors, so endurance days can feel wide and steady. Erewash Valley RC is the named club on the list, and The Run By Erewash Valley RC sits in the race calendar. HH Crit Series Round 1 of 5 and Round 4 of 5 bring closed-circuit crit racing for Women 2/3/4 riders.

Season: September is the best month here, because the legs still feel loose and the weather usually lets both runners and riders stack clean weeks. Summer gives Doncaster daytime temperatures no lower than parts of South East England, so locals get early miles, evening intervals, and longer rides before the heat bites. Winter changes the rhythm, because the 1991-2020 period averaged 38.1 air-frost nights per year. Runners lean on track sessions, Fartlek, and the named Pacers efforts like Shop till you drop, Bermuda Triangle, and Killer Hill, while cyclists keep the base miles steady and save the sharper stuff for clear roads.
