Solstice at the Lakes challenges runners to complete as many laps as possible of a 2.5 km marked loop at Leybourne Lakes Country Park in Kent within their chosen race duration. This timed trail event is centered around the summer solstice, offering 6-hour solo, 12-hour solo, and 24-hour solo races. The 24-hour format also includes options for pairs and team relays. The principle is straightforward: each lap contributes to the total, and the runner or relay team achieving the greatest distance in their category wins. The loop consists of maintained trail, gravel, and tarmac paths, providing a more controlled environment than a fell race but remaining off-road for a true trail running feel. The 24-hour race commences at midday and concludes at midday the following day, while the 12-hour race spans the evening, night, and early morning. Runners have the flexibility to manage their race without hourly cut-offs, fixed restart times, or a required pace. The race village provides amenities including food, drink, restrooms, changing facilities, rest areas, crew seating, live lap tracking, official timing, and medical assistance. All participants who finish at least one lap receive a medal, making the event accessible for newcomers while offering ample opportunity for experienced ultrarunners to aim for significant distances.
Running: Locals run Great Lines when they want a sharp Saturday hit without fuss. It's a 951 km route with 50 m ascent, and the course mixes granite resin, grass, and gravel paths. The Darnley trail gives you a 10k route for trail running training through Cobham Wood, Ashenbank Wood, and Shorne Country Park. Riverside Country Park links neatly with the Strand and the sea wall beside the River Medway. Gillingham and District Wheelers Club keeps running sessions going for triathletes in summer. Solstice at the Lakes Trail Runs and Winter Wanderlust 50K Ultra sit as anchor events.
Cycling: Gillingham gives riders enough lanes for base miles, TT legs, and a bit of gravel curiosity. Gillingham and District Wheelers Club is the local hub, with road cycling as the main thing and triathlon, gravel, and mountain biking around it. The club runs Saturday and Sunday group rides all year, plus Wednesday evening Time Trials in summer. The route runs 6 km and climbs 365 m. The route to the north runs 6 km and climbs 481 m. The south side is where the uphill work starts, with Star Hill in the mix. Gravesend CC Club 10, GP Neil Ord 10, and The Dave Ashdown Memorial Time Trial give racers targets.
Season: June and July are the sweet spot, and most people cycle then. Summer gives the Wheelers their Wednesday evening Time Trial rhythm, running sessions for the tri crowd, and plenty of Z2 time along Riverside Country Park or out toward Canterbury. Great Lines stays useful when you want controlled intervals on mixed surface without overthinking the route. Winter changes the kit and the grip, but the club still runs Saturday and Sunday group rides throughout the year. The grass and gravel at Great Lines ask for care, and the longer stuff turns into steady base miles rather than hero pace.
