Darlington Harriers Monthly Mile May

The Darlington Harriers' Monthly Mile is a low-cost, one-mile road race series held in Darlington's South Park, with a May race as part of its regular schedule. Open to runners aged 8 and up, it accommodates juniors, club runners, newcomers, and adults seeking a fast mile. Runners can register for the entire series or individual races, with on-the-night cash entries available. The course is a certified, single lap on gently rolling, traffic-free tarmac paths within the park. Results are submitted to Power of 10, and the races adhere to UKA competition rules, ensuring performances are officially recorded for athletes tracking rankings. The series awards are based on age grading percentages, not finishing order: the top 10 average age grade scores receive prizes. Participants must complete at least three races to qualify, with their best three scores counting. The final race is free for series entrants and concludes with an awards presentation. The host club, Darlington Harriers, established in 1891, offers junior groups from age 8 and senior coaching in running and athletics.

Race For Life Darlington

Race for Life Darlington is a 5K event held in South Park, Darlington, County Durham, with a 3K option available on the same morning. As part of Cancer Research UK's Race for Life series, the focus extends beyond simply completing the run or walk; participants contribute to funding research aimed at defeating cancer. The course begins and ends on grass within South Park. The terrain includes park paths, road, and grass, leading into the meadow before looping back through the park, passing the bowling green and clock tower, and returning to the starting field. This setup accommodates walkers, joggers, beginners, and families alongside regular runners, with the 3K offering a less demanding option to participate in the day's fundraising.

The Drop Darlington

The Drop Darlington begins with participants surrendering their phones, watches, and maps. They are then blindfolded and transported by bus to an unknown drop point. From there, the task is straightforward yet challenging: navigate back on foot to the event centre at Up & Running in Darlington. This is a navigation challenge, not a conventionally marked race, offering 6, 10, and 15-mile options calculated as straight-line distances. The actual distance covered can be considerably greater, as each runner selects their own route through the trails and urban peripheries surrounding Darlington and County Durham. With no course markers, no route instructions, and no GPS safety system, progress relies on judgment, spatial awareness, and decisions made under pressure. This format renders the event demanding and uncertain, particularly for those accustomed to races where the primary difficulty is simply running at speed.

About cycling & running in Teesside

Teesside Training Notes

Running: Locals use the River Tees as the easy line through the week. The route runs 9 km from Stockton town centre to the Newport Bridge near Middlesbrough, passing Maze Park Nature Reserve and going under the Infinity Bridge. The Tees route covers 84 km with 1 m of gain. Runners do 55 km with 202 m of gain when they want more bite. Albert parkrun and Stewart parkrun bring friendly Saturday miles and a cuppa after. More Than A Run meets weekly. Darlington Harriers Monthly Mile, Darlington 10K, and Darlington Half Marathon make tidy anchor events.

Cycling: Riders get plenty from the river before chasing lanes. The Tees Barrage Ride gives 6 km of traffic-free spinning and mixes asphalt with firm unsealed track past Portrack Marshes Nature Reserve. The Full River Tees Loop works for steady Z2 and family-paced base miles. CTC Teesside Group and Teesside Cycling Touring Club keep the social side moving around Middlesbrough, Cleveland, and North Yorkshire. Teesside DA central section runs Sunday rides from Hartburn Shops, Marton Shops, and Kirklevington. Sunday groups ride up to 80 miles, sometimes 100, averaging about 15 mph. Carlton Bank is where the climbing talk starts. VTTA (North) 10 and the Crathorne/Cleveland Tontine course give racers a target.

Season: Summer suits Teesside best if you want longer rides and consistent running. More Than A Run holds 10k training sessions at Middlesbrough Sports Village during the summer, and the cycling crowd can stretch Sunday rides towards 80 to 100 miles. ParkRun keeps Albert parkrun and Stewart parkrun ticking every Saturday morning. The Sunday rides include a cafe stop and usually finish with light refreshments, which feels right after base miles. Autumn and Winter shorten the bike distances, and locals still keep the routine steady. The Christmas lunch at the Lordstones cafe on Carlton Bank gives winter riders a proper marker.
