Splash of Color 5K

Splash of Color 5K is a color-splash run/walk at Garvin Park in Evansville, Indiana, with a 5K for ages 8 and up and a 1-mile Family Fun Walk. The 5K starts in the morning, followed by the family walk, so the event is built for both runners and families with younger kids. It follows the color-run format: participants are splashed with color along the way, and a white or light-colored shirt is recommended so the powder shows up clearly. The event supports St. Vincent Early Learning Center, with Ascension St. Vincent Evansville as title sponsor and the Evansville Trails Coalition as a program partner. Money raised helps keep high-quality early childhood education accessible and supports toddler and preschool trail programming through “Trails on a Smaller Scale.” Its format connects to the wider color-run idea: untimed 5K events inspired by Holi, where colored food-grade cornstarch replaces medals, prizes, and race-day pressure.

River City 5 & 10 Miler

The River City 5 & 10 Miler begins and ends at Lamasco Park in Evansville, offering participants a choice between a 5-mile or 10-mile race. The course primarily follows the Greenway Passage, presenting a direct trail-style road race instead of a city tour. The 5-mile option is designated for walkers, and To the Finish Timing manages the bib timing. Two turnarounds mark both distances. The initial turnaround is at Shirley James Plaza, where the course momentarily deviates from the Greenway. The second turnaround varies by race length: the 5-miler turns around just past the Fulton Avenue bridge, and the 10-miler continues to the trail's end at Stringtown Road. All finishers will receive a custom die-cast medal featuring Evansville hydroplane racing imagery, and a hydroplane boat will be on display, provided by Mike Talarzyk. Awards are presented for overall winners, runner-up positions, top male and female finishers in each distance, and age groups ranging from 19-and-under to 80-plus.

Franklin Street Beer Fun

Franklin Street Beer Fun is a 21-and-over run, walk, or crawl on Franklin Street in Evansville, Indiana. It starts at LeRoys on Mt Vernon Avenue and takes place on a Saturday afternoon in October, with participants moving between six bars instead of racing for a finish time. The route is built around beer stops: each of the six bars gives participants one beer, and LeRoys also serves as the final stop. The entry includes an event T-shirt and a finish medal, making it feel closer to a social bar crawl with running shoes than a standard road race.

About cycling & running in Evansville

Evansville Training Notes

Running: Locals run a lot of park-to-trail miles here. Eight12 Run Club meets at 612 S Weinbach Ave at 7:00 AM for a 7:15 AM takeoff. The club keeps it social, and no one runs alone. Burdette Park and the USI campus trail handle hillier Z2 days because the trail between Burdette and USI campus is hilly, curvy, and scenic. USI campus trails mix paved and unpaved sections. The Loop gives locals a 2-3 mile uninterrupted sidewalk starting at Mesker Hill. Angel Mounds Trailhead works once it dries out. Evansville Labor Day Run/Walk and River City 5 & 10 Miler anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride the Greenway, USI Burdette Trail, Newburgh roads, and the Bike Shop 30 miler when base miles need shape. The city has 75 miles of separated and protected urban trail. USI Burdette Trail winds through the University of Southern Indiana campus to Burdette Park. Friedman Park adds paved biking and walking trails, water, rest stops, and restrooms. Evansville Bicycle Club connects cycling enthusiasts who ride for the love of the road. The Bike Shop 30 miler sits around Newburgh and has some hills. Mesker Hill and the Burdette-USI side hold the better local climbing. The 44th Annual Great Pumpkin Metric is the anchor event.

Season: June and July bring the best stretch for both runners and cyclists. Summer in Evansville runs hot and humid, so locals start early, keep intervals honest, and leave the big Z2 work for shade or river air. 7°C. Evansville sees 41 days a year with a maximum temperature of 32°C or above. USI is peaceful during the summers. Angel Mounds rewards bug spray when the trail dries out. 6°C. Winter brings cold-to-cool miles and about 56 cm of annual snowfall. Cyclists shift toward shorter road spins, Greenway cruising, and steady trainer legs.
