Joe Martinez Run for Remembrance 5k Run & Walk

The Joe Martinez Run for Remembrance 5k Run & Walk is a United States remembrance event centered on a short, accessible distance: 5 kilometers for runners and walkers. This format establishes it as a community race, not solely a specialist competition, allowing participants to run or walk the course to support the remembrance purpose. The event context is linked to Bel Air, Maryland, the location where Rachel Morin was murdered along the Ma and Pa Trail. Morin operated a house cleaning business and had five children. Following her death, her car was discovered at the Ma and Pa trailhead, a volunteer found her body, and the Harford County Sheriff's Office increased patrols on the trail. Victor Martinez Hernandez was subsequently found guilty of her murder and received two consecutive life sentences plus 40 years.

Empowering Future Leaders through Scholarships 5k Run/Walk

The Empowering Future Leaders through Scholarships 5K Run/Walk takes place in late summer at North Central Park in Laredo, Texas. This 5,000-meter community event unites runners and walkers with a shared fundraising goal: providing scholarships, paid internships, and mentorship for students. The race supports a scholarship program for students in grades 4 through 12, extending beyond graduating seniors. Annually, six students receive awards, two per category, recognizing community improvement ideas and entrepreneurship. Recipients can participate yearly from fourth grade onward and are paired with a year-long mentor. A recent event attracted over 400 participants, with a post-race gathering of more than 600 attendees. Awards are presented to the top three finishers in each age group, and overall male and female winners receive trophies. Age divisions range from 10 and under to 70 and over.

LPD National Police Week 5k/10k Run & 1 Mile Run

The LPD National Police Week 5K/10K Run & 1 Mile Run begins at El Metro Park & Ride on Hillside Road in Laredo, Texas, during National Police Week. The Laredo Police Department organizes this late-spring community race, offering three distances: a 5K run, a 10K run, and a 1-mile walk or run. The event supports Back the Blue and the remembrance aspect of Police Week, with the day focused on honoring law enforcement officers, including those who have fallen. Over 1,000 participants attended a recent running, and the team divisions highlight the intended participants: law enforcement agencies, community groups, schools, and city departments all compete for both participation numbers and finishing times.

About cycling & running in Laredo

Laredo Training Notes

Running: Laredo runners get their steady miles at North Central Park, LCC South Campus, Sanchez/Ochoa path, and Krueger Field. The North Central Park loop is 30 km with +14 m, so it works for easy loops and quick intervals. The Sanchez/Ochoa path runs 14 km with +47 m when the day needs more bite. Krueger Field runs 11 km with +881 m, so it sits out there as the big-distance anchor. 5K, VFW Run to Remember R2R, and Joe Martinez Run for Remembrance 5k Run & Walk.

Cycling: Laredo riders keep the gravel side simple and useful. The 3 mi route is the long base-miles option when Z2 needs room. The 7 mi route works when the legs only need a short dirt hit. Gravelmap calls the feel “Sandy. ” Named cycling clubs do not show up in the local notes, and no crit, gran fondo, or cyclocross anchor is listed. The west brings Sierra Madre Oriental and Chihuahuan Desert influence, but no named climb is pinned down for Laredo.

Season: Laredo trains best when locals respect the heat and use the rainy-season rhythm from May to October. Summer gives runners and riders sweltering days, and record highs can reach over 45°C, so early starts, shade breaks, and honest Z2 matter. August carries the normal mean temperature for peak summer, and the city still has enough park loops and gravel roads to keep the week moving. Winter brings mild temperatures, with January representing the coolest month of the year. Record lows can fall below freezing, so locals swap heat management for layers and steadier sessions.
