Little Rock Marathon

The Little Rock Marathon begins in downtown Little Rock on the first weekend of March, awarding finishers an intentionally oversized medal. This USATF-sanctioned road marathon in Arkansas covers a certified 26.2-mile single loop. It has an eight-hour time limit, accommodating walkers and newer runners. The half marathon has a four-hour limit, aligning with the race's motto, “Arkansas’ Race for Every Pace.” The event attracts participants from all 50 states and over 15 countries, with proceeds benefiting Little Rock Parks & Recreation. The course crosses the Arkansas River and passes Little Rock landmarks such as the Arkansas State Capitol, River Market District, Clinton Presidential Center, Governor’s Mansion, MacArthur Birthplace/Military Museum, and Historic Little Rock Central High School. It presents more elevation changes than many first-time participants anticipate: the start is at 270 feet, the finish at 260 feet, and the highest point reaches 519 feet, with the most significant ascent occurring early. Bill Rodgers aptly described Little Rock as “a little salty.” The race incorporates local character through a couch potato mile, a Lipstick Stop for finish photos, an annual theme, runner costumes, and medals that organizers note increase in size each year.

Main Street Mile

The Main Street Mile is a one-mile race through downtown Annandale, held two weeks before Christmas to start the town's Main Street Holiday festivities. It finishes in front of City Hall and is designed for families, casual runners, and anyone seeking a short, accessible race instead of a long road event. The race supports local causes, with part of the proceeds benefiting Annandale school students and Annandale volunteer police officers. Reserve officers also help ensure the event's safety. Packet pickup is at In Hot Water, and runners typically go to Billy D's afterward for a complimentary pasta bar and awards ceremony. The mile is run alongside the Snowflake Shuffle, and trophies are awarded to the fastest male and female runners in both races, although only a small number usually completes the double.

About cycling & running in Little Rock

River Trails And Big Rock Legs

Running: Locals run the Arkansas River Trail when they want steady base miles without overthinking it. Emerald Park gives North Little Rock runners my favorite run: the Highland Trail, the Emerald Park Trail, and the Arkansas River Trail Loop. The Highland Trail runs behind the North Little Rock Veterans Administration Hospital on Big Rock Mountain. The single-track connector lets runners hop between the Highland Trails and the Arkansas River Trail. Conway Running Club keeps it friendly with weekly groups running 6-minute to 12-minute miles. Bigfoot Running Company shows up around the race scene. Little Rock Marathon anchors the calendar as a Boston Marathon qualifier, with Juneteenth in Da Rock 5K and SCORCHIN' SQUIRREL TRAIL RUN adding local flavor.

Cycling: Riders use the Arkansas River Trail as the spine of the metro. The Arkansas River Trail: Grand Loop runs 88 miles through Little Rock, North Little Rock, Maumelle, and Conway. Two Rivers Park gives cyclists Bike Fixit Stations when long Z2 turns into a little field repair. Mello Velo keeps the Little Rock club scene connected. Big Dam Bridge 100 is the big anchor event, with courses ranging from 15 to 105 miles. The River Classic follows the Big Dam Bridge 100 route in September. Big Rock Mountain gives North Little Rock the close-in climbing, and the Ouachita Mountains sit nearby for harder legs.

Season: June, July, August, and September are the best months here, and locals treat summer like a training block. SCORCHIN' SQUIRREL TRAIL RUN runs through Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center's 1200 acres, and the course brings significant incline plus water crossings in wet weather. Summer Meltdown Half Marathon runs on shaded paths, waterways, and rolling hills. Riders keep bottles full and use the river trail for early base miles before the heat gets loud. Winter changes the mood more than the routes. Ugly Sweater Race | 5K - Elf Dash lands on December 19, 2026, and both sports shift toward steadier miles and lower-key groups.
