IRONMAN 70.3 Wisconsin is a middle-distance triathlon held in Madison, Wisconsin, as part of the IRONMAN 70.3 series. Competitors swim 1.2 miles, cycle 56 miles, and complete a 13.1-mile run. The event is managed by World Triathlon Corporation, the entity behind the IRONMAN brand, adhering to the standard half-Ironman structure instead of a local short-course format. The course is centered in Madison, featuring a finish line within the city and routes that traverse city streets and extend toward the surrounding lakes. This location offers participants a blend of urban Madison and the nearby lake regions. Landmarks such as the Wisconsin State Capitol, Olbrich Botanical Gardens, and the Chazen Museum of Art are accessible for those extending their visit for the race weekend. The event attracts endurance athletes seeking the complete triathlon challenge but not the full 140.6-mile Ironman distance.
Running: Locals run Madison like a park system with lakes in the middle. The Lake Monona Loop gives you 13 miles when you want steady Z2 without thinking too hard. The UW-Madison Arboretum, Picnic Point, Pheasant Branch, and the Capital City Trail to Lake Farm Park handle easy days, long runs, and soft-surface resets. Movin' Shoes Running Club keeps Sunday as the biggest run of the week, and Madison Run Club makes it easy to find a subgroup at your pace. Madison Marathon, Run Madtown Half Marathon, Karl Harter's Full Moon 5k, and Henry Vilas Zoo - Run Wild give the calendar real anchor races.
Cycling: Locals ride the paved stuff hard because Madison is built for it. The Lake Monona Bike Loop stays paved and clearly marked for 13 miles, and the city of Monona puts short, steep hill climbs right into the loop. Great Rides Madison, BBC, Lymphomaniacs, Machinery Row Bicycles, Rocket Velocafe, and Wednesday Night Bike Rides keep the group-ride scene busy. The loop is an 8 km route with 543 m elevation. Ironman Wisconsin is the big anchor event, and Blue Mound State Park is where the climbs start feeling real.
Season: Summer is the best stretch here, and Madison feels built for base miles, lake loops, and post-run brewery runs at Olbrich Biergarten. Locals still train through the shoulder seasons, because the paths stay useful and the Arboretum, Picnic Point, and Pheasant Branch keep trail days close. Winter changes the kit more than the mindset. Runners keep showing up from below-zero mornings to balmy afternoons, while riders use studded tires and stick to the bike paths when street lanes get iffy. Fake spring brings high 30s and 40s with rain, and that can feel worse than actual winter.
