Run For First Responders

Run For First Responders is a morning 5K and kids 400m dash in Turlock, California, starting at 1360 N. Johnson Road. The kids race begins first, then the 5K, making the event suitable for families and adults seeking a short road-race distance. It is linked to the Turlock Chaplaincy Fun Run, now in its 16th year, with race-day check-in opening before the kids dash and 5K commence. The race benefits the Turlock Chaplaincy, a nonprofit serving Turlock Police, Turlock Fire, and CSUS Police personnel and their families. Its chaplains respond to public-safety calls 24/7, including fatal crashes, armed robberies, in-home deaths, and other critical incidents requiring immediate support. The organization also provides counseling for first responders and character coaching in local schools, with this event contributing approximately 25% of its annual budget. The 5K offers cash prizes for the top three finishers, and the fastest kids in the 400m dash get Lulu’s Ice Cream gift cards.

MODESTO MEMORIAL CLASSIC

The Modesto Memorial Classic offers a 5K and a 1-mile run/walk at East La Loma Park in Modesto, California. The 5K route winds through a shaded park course, and the 1-mile option is suitable for walkers. This setup accommodates both runners seeking a short race and families preferring a less strenuous distance. A Children’s Fun Run is available for participants aged 10 and under, alongside virtual 1-mile and 5K options for those unable to attend in person. The event welcomes all ages, with distinct 1-mile and 5K categories for youth and adults. All finishers in the 1-mile and 5K races receive a medal, as do all children participating in the Fun Run. Awards are presented to the top three finishers in each age group: 10-year increments for the 1-mile race and 5-year increments for the 5K. Registration includes a pancake breakfast, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Delta Vet Center. The event concludes with a short ceremony before awards distribution.

Two Cities Marathon

The Twin Cities Marathon is a 26.2-mile road race from Minneapolis to St. Paul, typically held on the first weekend of October. It developed from separate marathon events in each city, with origins tracing back to the Land of Lakes Marathon, a small Minnesota Distance Running Association event that began with just five participants. Currently, it ranks among the largest marathons in the United States, with Medtronic serving as the official sponsor. The course begins in Minneapolis, passes through downtown, and continues along parkways beside lakes and rivers before concluding in St. Paul. The marathon is now the centerpiece of a broader race weekend: adults can compete in the TC 10 Mile on Sunday, while Saturday features the TC 10K, TC 5K, a family mile, toddler races, a diaper dash, and the Mascot Invitational. Thousands of volunteers support the event, and its early days were notably unconventional: the original Land of Lakes Marathon lacked a set course, imposed a strict 3:30 time limit, and was once free to enter.

About cycling & running in Merced

Merced Training Notes

Running: Merced locals run the flat stuff first, then make it longer along water and campus paths. Campus Parkway is a nice stretch and has a paved sidewalk from Coffee Street to UC Merced. East Bear Creek and McKee works when you want a simple out-and-back. Black Rascal Trail around Rahilly feels super long and connects into Bellevue Ranch, Bear Creek Trail, and Campus Parkway. UC Merced's Vernal Pool Trail gives a good green out-and-back. Merced Running Club runs from Rahilly Park every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 PM for 2-3 miles. Raz'N Health Fitness Festival and Hello Summer Run are the local anchor races.

Cycling: Roadies line up Saturday mornings near Chevron at Yosemite and G in the Raley's Parking Lot. Riders usually take an out-and-back to Snelling or a loop toward Planada and back. Tour de Friends keeps a big local Facebook group moving with rides of varying lengths and speeds. UC Merced's Cycling Club gives students a home base. The out-and-back to Snelling gives you 9 km with 187 m of ascent when you want real base miles. The route covers 7 miles on mostly rolling dirt road. Old Lake Road is the closest hill in town. Merced Falls Road gives a 5+ mile climb.

Season: May is the sweet spot for running and riding in Merced. Locals build Z2 and steady base miles before the heat settles in. Summer brings hot, dry days, and Merced averages 99.7 days with highs of 32°C or higher. Runners and cyclists shift intervals earlier and keep easy days honest. Winter stays mild and damp, so the roads, canals, and paved sidewalks keep working. Merced averages 27.8 days with lows of 0°C or lower, and winter turns Fall Fun Runs, Turkey Trot, Thanksgiving Day Fun Run, Christmas Lights Fun Run, and Christmas Eve Fun Run into useful anchors.
