Run The River

Run the River is a late-July evening race series on Ashman Street in downtown Midland, Michigan, centered on the Tridge during the Midland River Days Festival. The event offers short distances: a 1-mile run, a 5K run with separate male and female starts, and a 5K walk, allowing runners and walkers to share the downtown festival atmosphere. The course is primarily the downtown Midland riverfront. Run the River is part of the Midland Triple Challenge, which also includes Dow RunWalk and the Loons Pennant Race, with options for both 5K and 1-mile participants. Finishers get a stein and a drink ticket for the Rotary Tent. The festival also features live music, food, and hot air balloons.

Tri-Kids-Try Youth Triathlon

Tri-Kids-Try Youth Triathlon offers children their own swim-bike-run race at Plymouth Park in Midland, Michigan. The youngest participants begin in the zero-depth end of the pool. The event includes a Friday evening MINI TKT for ages 3-5 and a Saturday morning main race for ages 6-15. It is a straightforward youth triathlon: children swim, bike, and run within the park, featuring race waves, a transition area, volunteers on the course, and finisher medals. The distances are adjusted by age and division, ensuring first-time participants do not face adult-level challenges. Ages 6-11 swim 25 meters, bike 1.75 miles, and run half a mile. Ages 12-15 swim 50 meters, bike 3.5 miles, and run half a mile. The Open Division has longer distances, with ages 12-15 swimming 200 meters, biking 5.25 miles, and running 1.5 miles. The MINI TKT is scaled down: a short pool swim, a 25-yard bike ride, and a run under a quarter mile, including a shirt and participant award. A Kids Triathlon Camp is held before race weekend, with sessions offered in the morning and afternoon by age for children seeking practice.

10th Annual Red Moon Trail Run presented by Bayne's Apple Valley

The Red Moon Trail Run takes participants into Midland City Forest in Midland, Michigan, for an evening trail race illuminated by small LED lights. This annual event, presented by Bayne's Apple Valley and organized with Dig Deep Race Events, provides a daytime 5K and night options for the 5K, 10K, and 25K distances. The 5K is open to runners, walkers, and ruckers; the 10K includes runners and ruckers; and the 25K is for runners only. The course features flat, wide-track trails and mountain bike trails, avoiding narrow single track. The start and finish are located in the field below the sledding hill, near the Monroe Road parking lot. Runners in longer distances will pass through the 5K finish arch on each lap, receiving split times. All finishers receive a medal, custom bib, chip timing, and free online photos from the finish arch. Participants of legal age may enjoy cold adult beverages in the designated tent. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Great Lakes Bay Veterans Coalition, supporting service members, veterans, and their families in the region.

About cycling & running in Midland

Midland Training Notes

Running: Locals run Midland through parks, river paths, and easy out-and-backs. The Pere Marquette Rail-Trail gives steady base miles from the Tridge toward Dublin. The Chippewa Trail runs 4 miles from the Tridge southwest to the Chippewa Nature Center. You can do a 10 km day with 19 m of gain. You can do 75 km with 6 m of gain when you want flat Z2. BARC covers Bay, Midland, and Saginaw Counties. Greater Midland Dow RunWalk, Run The River, Floyd 5K Run / Walk, and Red Moon Trail Run are the anchor races.

Cycling: Locals ride the paved Pere Marquette Rail-Trail and Chippewa Trail for clean endurance work. The Gnu Loop Mountain Biking Trail runs 7 km. Gnu Loop rides like local singletrack and suits AM and XC bikes. The Gnu Loop climb only gains 3 m, so Midland climbing means short punches, not hill repeats. The trail sits between 195 m and 198 m, so intervals come from effort, not elevation. MMBC practices once a week on Wednesday nights at City Forest. Central Michigan Mountain Bike Association is the local trail association, and MMBC points riders toward the MiSCA fall race series.

Season: Summer carries the best Midland feel for both runners and riders, with hot, rainy days and cool nights. Locals watch the low spots after rain, because City Forest can be a little wet in low areas while most of the trail is fine. June matters for the bike crowd because MMBC practice begins in mid June. Fall keeps the race rhythm going with MiSCA for MMBC and trail events like Trick or Trot. Winter changes the whole week. Cold, snowy days with average highs around freezing push runners onto plowed paths when they can, while City Forest walking trails include 8 miles for XC skiing.
