Run the Runway

Run the Runway takes participants onto the newly renovated tarmac at Midland Airpark in Midland, Texas, rather than city streets or park paths. ConocoPhillips presents this annual event, which features a chip-timed 5K with age-division scoring and a 1-mile fun run. This setup allows families, walkers, aviation enthusiasts, and competitive local runners to participate on the airport grounds. The course utilizes airport property, offering participants the unique opportunity to run where planes typically take off. In a past edition, it was the sole race held on airport property in Texas. The event also inaugurates the City of Midland’s Fly Into Fall, a public aviation day featuring aircraft displays, aviation professionals, flight simulators, drone activities, airport fire truck demonstrations, classic cars, children's activities, food vendors, and coffee.

MCHS Foundation Tumbleweed Triathlon

The MCHS Foundation Tumbleweed Triathlon is a sprint triathlon in Odessa, Texas, held at the University of Texas Permian Basin pool and campus. Taking place in July, it adheres to USA Triathlon rules. The course includes a 400-yard pool swim, a 20K bike ride, and a 5K run. Chip timing is used, helmets are mandatory for the bike leg, and the event is limited to 66 individual participants and 10 teams, making it a local, compact race. The swim is conducted in a 50-meter pool using a snake format, where participants progress lane by lane. The bike course is flat, utilizing closed lanes around the UTPB campus. The 5K run is an out-and-back route on campus roads with minimal traffic. Participants must attend a pre-race meeting before the start. Packet pickup requires identification and either a USAT card or a one-day registration. This event supports the Medical Center Health Foundation and has been held for over twenty years.

About cycling & running in Midland

Midland Base Miles

Running: Locals run Midland like a small scene that knows its loops. You can run 7 miles when you want a quiet lap. Green Tree 4 Mile Loop works for steady Z2 when you want 5 miles. Tour de Downtown & Old Midland + Neely stretches into a 6-7 miler. Midland Run Crew keeps it social with Track Tuesdays, Rise & Run at Centennial Park, and Saturday Long Runs. Run the Runway, Special Olympics Texas Torch Run 5k, Heart & Sole 5K, and Energy City Race anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Energy City Bikes pulls riders together with a Saturday Shop Ride from the shop every Saturday with 2 pace groups. Permian Basin Bicycle Association has backed local riders and events since 1974, and ViM Racing gives the city a real race-team edge. The typical loop runs 20 km and gains only +50 m, so intervals and base miles matter more than mountain gearing. 3% grade. Odessa Mountain Bike Park gives nearby singletrack with 10 miles at 7155 Eastridge Rd in Odessa.

Season: Spring and Fall are the best months, and locals plan big blocks around them. Afternoons hit 9°C about 24 days a month, so runs and rides move early. Midland Run Crew makes the rhythm obvious with 6 miles before 6:00AM, and cyclists treat those mornings like survival miles. Winter stays cool to mild most weeks, and occasional cold waves interrupt both long runs and shop rides. Chinook winds can flip winter into very warm or hot conditions, so layers and flexible pacing matter more than a fixed plan.
