About cycling & running in Reading

Reading Training Notes

Running: Locals run Reading by linking park miles, river trail, and short punchy hills. Fleet Feet Saturday Running Club gives the week a steady long-run rhythm, with Saturday mornings moving by season and the location changing weekly. The Thursday Night Run rolls 3-5 miles through Wyomissing Park when legs need easy company. Monocacy Hill gives Berks runners a short but technical trail run with rock scrambles, abandoned structures, a tough climb, and a beautiful overlook. The loop runs 13 km and gains 423 m when base miles need bite. Reading Hospital Road Run and Charlie Horse Trail Half-Marathon & Dirty Pony 5K sit well as anchor races.

Cycling: Locals ride Reading with the Schuylkill River on the west side and the county roads opening fast once you point out of town. The route starts 5 miles from Oley Valley High School and traverses the farm fields countryside of Berks County. The Schuylkill River Trail Thun Section works for Z2 spins, gravel tires, and easy recovery miles. The Exeter Scenic River Trail gives riders a mostly-flat converted rail-trail feel. Mount Penn and Neversink Mountain hold the obvious climb hunting near the city. Sleepy Hollow Athletic Club keeps the endurance crowd visible through Charlie Horse weekend, even when the bike talk turns to crits, gran fondo prep, and cyclocross legs.

Season: Spring and fall are the best months because Reading gets milder temperatures and lower humidity. Summer brings warm, humid training, and July highs average around 29°C, so locals move intervals early and save shaded park miles for later. The city averages 27 days above 32°C each year, and those days turn easy runs and Z2 rides into honest work. Winter changes the rhythm without shutting it down. January highs average around 4°C and lows average around -5°C, so runners watch footing, riders pick cleaner trail or road windows, and annual snowfall around 60 cm makes consistency the real win.
