Amanda's Race 5k

Atlanta’s Peachtree Road Race now features two 10K events on the same Peachtree course. One is a downhill run toward Piedmont Park on the U.S. Independence Day holiday, and the other is an uphill “Polar Opposite” run during the first weekend of January. The original southbound race began with 110 participants and later became the world’s largest 10K, offering 60,000 spots, with over 70,000 people frequently attempting to register. It serves as a road race for recreational runners as well as a professional competition, attracting elite 10K athletes and hosting the U.S. men’s and women’s 10K championship. The established south course begins at Lenox Square and concludes in Piedmont Park. The north version reverses this route, starting from 10th Street at Piedmont Park and heading back toward Lenox Square. The event includes the Shepherd Center wheelchair division prior to the main race. Participants also include soldiers stationed in the Middle East. Children have their own Peachtree Junior events in Piedmont Park, comprising a one-mile run and a 50-meter dash. An early tradition involves T-shirt shortages, as organizers underestimated demand on multiple occasions, distributing shirts to finishers until supplies were depleted.

Tackle the Tar

Tackle the Tar is an annual 5K obstacle race and family day at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The Rotary Club of Rocky Mount hosts it, with a Kids 1-mile fun run starting the morning before the adult heats. Runners can choose competitive or fun-run heats, and the schedule also includes First Responders and College heats. All heats are timed except the Kids Run. The 5K starts at the sports complex, then sends runners through historic Battle Park and the E.B. Grain Company property. The course includes a mud pit and at least 15 obstacles, so quick-drying clothes and regular athletic shoes make more sense than race-day finery. Finishers get a shirt, medal, goodie bag, and a free beer if they are over 21. Spectators can watch for free, the festivities run until noon, and all proceeds fund college scholarships for students in the Rocky Mount area, with more than $720,000 raised since 2016.

Medal Madness

Medal Madness in Savannah, Georgia, offers 5K, 10K, and half marathon distances, all beginning at 8:30 AM. Each race is limited to 65 participants, suggesting a local, focused event rather than a large-scale competition. Registration costs are $30 for the 5K, $45 for the 10K, and $65 for the half marathon, excluding RunSignup processing fees. The race page lacks a course map and route details but outlines the morning's schedule. Packet pickup is available 30 minutes before the start and concludes 10 minutes prior to the race. All participants must register via RunSignup, as on-site registration is not provided. Members of the US Road Running Race Club receive a 50% discount on all distances.

About cycling & running in Rocky Mount

Rocky Mount Training Notes

Running: Rocky Mount runners get their easy miles along the Tar River Trail, with City Lake Park and Battle Park giving the run a proper local feel. Locals use the shorter named routes for weekday intervals, and the 18-mile route gains 92m when the long run needs real base miles. Run the City | Rocky Mount Run Club meets weekly at The Power House at Rocky Mount Mills, and the vibe is simple: We run together. Ninja 5K, Medal Madness 5K, and Tackle the Tar are the anchor events locals know by name.

Cycling: Rocky Mount riders point the bike toward Battle Park Loop when they want dirt without a big drive. The loop runs 2 km as green-rated singletrack, and the trail climbs 17m while dropping 18m. Locals call it Fast and Flowing, with log skinnies, slab boulder fields, creek crossings, jumps, and blue-black optional lines when the legs want more than Z2. The basic trail suits beginning riders, so XC riders and trail runners share the same rhythm. Run the City gives the named club scene, while the cycling brief lists no crit, gran fondo, cyclocross race, or road anchor event.

Season: Rocky Mount seasons reward steady training most of the year, with spring and fall feeling best for both run volume and ride volume. Summer brings hot, humid miles, so locals move early, keep Z2 honest, and save intervals for shade or shorter loops near City Lake Park and Battle Park. Winter stays cool and sometimes moderately cold, but the city does not shut down. Runners keep working the Tar River Trail, and riders can still use Battle Park Loop when the singletrack is in shape.
