10th Annual Gold Star 500

The Gold Star 500 is a supported 500-mile bicycle ride across Illinois, beginning in Chester and finishing in Schaumburg. The primary format is a five-day endurance ride, with cyclists typically covering 95 to 120 miles daily. Shorter one-day or three-day options are also available, making the event accessible to those unable to commit to the full distance. The route travels north through several Illinois communities, including Springfield and Bloomington. This ride commemorates Illinois Fallen Military Service Members, and participants will meet Gold Star Family members who will share accounts of the individuals being honored. Registration, fundraising, sponsors, and donations fund scholarships and Fallen Hero History Project videos. An all-volunteer organization states that over 95% of funds are directed toward preserving those names and stories.

Sangamon Cycling Series - Four Ride Series

The Sangamon Cycling Series is a four-ride summer training series in Sangamon County, Illinois, organized by the Springfield Bicycle Club. It offers one supported ride monthly from May through August, starting at 8:00 AM. Meeting points rotate among locations like Pawnee, Chatham, Auburn Community Park, and Athens. Riders select their own distance, with options from approximately 25 miles up to a century ride, based on the day's route. This is a club training series, designed for cyclists aiming to increase distance before the Capital City Century in Sherman. Groups typically ride between 10 mph and 20 mph, accommodating beginners, steady club riders, and faster cyclists. Routes are unmarked; riders should know basic road safety and be comfortable with group riding and GPS navigation. The Springfield Bicycle Club is a 501(c)(3) organization with over 380 members. The small entry fee supports insurance and ride support.

Thunder Road Gravel Tour

The Thunder Road Gravel Tour is a free gravel ride series in central Illinois, with rides scheduled from May through August. Each event provides route options of approximately 30 and 60 miles. The format is a hybrid between a group ride and a low-key competition: participants can complete the entire course at their own speed, with timed gravel segments on Strava contributing to points. The routes are published shortly before each ride, with files accessible on Ride with GPS and discussions occurring in a Facebook group. A convenience store stop is typically included mid-ride, but there is no SAG support, meaning riders must manage their own flats and minor mechanical issues. The Springfield Bicycle Club organizes the series, in partnership with Gravel Syndicate and Rural Cyclery. A special event, the Tour DeCrepit Bridges, focuses on locating numerous old, dilapidated bridges. Following each ride, the group often convenes at a local brewery, bar, or restaurant, adding a social element to the timed segments and standings.

About cycling & running in Springfield

Springfield Training Notes

Running: Springfield runners use Washington Park for steady laps, warmups, and extra miles. The big loop runs 32 km with 15 m of gain, and the small loop runs 2 km with 24 m of gain. The route covers 82 km and gains 11 m. The full route covers 48 km and 43 m of gain. DistanceProject keeps the community side moving. Springfield Road Runners Club hosts races, group runs, trainings, and socials. The Lincoln Presidential Half-Marathon, Illinois State Fair Parade Run, Abe's Amble 10K/5K, and Frostbite Festival anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Springfield riders lean on the Sangamon Valley Trail, Wabash Trail, Interurban Trail, and Lost Bridge Trail for Z2, tempo, and town-to-town miles. The Sangamon Valley Trail north branch toward Sherman is the favorite ride for distance, speed, and scenery. The Interurban Trail goes to Chatham, and the Lost Bridge Trail goes to Rochester. Springfield Bicycle Club runs road and gravel programs from late April to October and hosts the Capital City Century. Gravel riders use Cass County Gravel when they want wide open work, Indian Creek valley rollers, and Crazy Horse Hill. Thunder Road Gravel Tour, Sangamon Cycling Series, and the Gold Star 500 keep the bigger ride days honest.

Season: Late April to October gives Springfield cyclists the cleanest season for group rides, base miles, and longer road days. Summer brings hot, humid air, so locals start early, carry more fluid, and watch the sky because thunderstorms are common. Runners still get good work done through summer with Thursday 5k fun run/walks at Springfield Running Center and shorter intervals when the heat stacks up. Winter changes the rhythm for both sports. Cyclists move carefully around cold, rather snowy stretches, while runners keep the habit alive with Frostbite Festival energy and whatever Z2 the day allows.
