Miles and Mortarboards 5K

The Miles and Mortarboards 5K begins in Unity Park on Main Street in Kingstree, South Carolina, with the start line near the Train Depot. This is a timed 5K run and walk associated with Williamsburg Technical College. Packet pickup and race-day registration occur in the park prior to the start of the first pace group. Registration covers a shirt and timing; children under 12 participate free with a registered adult. The course travels through historic downtown Kingstree, crosses Highway 52, and reaches Black River Gilland Park before returning via the same route. Jogging strollers with a fixed or locked front wheel are permitted from the rear of the field. Post-race awards in Unity Park recognize overall and age-group winners. Nearby, health and wellness vendors will be present, and local businesses will host sales or special events. Proceeds benefit the Williamsburg Technical College Foundation, aiding the college’s students, faculty, staff, and the local community.

McLeod Health & Fitness Center Kids Splash and Dash

The McLeod Health & Fitness Center Kids Splash and Dash is a youth swim-run event in Florence, South Carolina, serving as the state's only USAT Splash and Dash. Designed for ages 5 to 17, it features a 150-yard pool swim followed by a 2K (1.2-mile) run. This format offers children a brief, straightforward introduction to multisport racing, omitting the cycling leg of a triathlon. Participants begin individually, entering the pool every 20 seconds, with the oldest age group starting first to allow younger children to observe the race procedure. Swimmers proceed across the pool lanes, exiting via the left-side stairs. They then move to the outdoor transition area, put on shoes, and complete two laps around the McLeod Health and Fitness Center before reaching the finish. Parents or guardians can accompany younger participants on the run. All finishers receive custom medals, and awards are presented to the top male and female finishers in each age division.

About cycling & running in Sumter

Sumter Training Notes

Running: Locals run Sumter like a small, steady base-miles town. Unity Park gives the easy meet-up point, and Black River Gilland Park adds a downtown-to-park feel when you want a cleaner loop. Palmetto Park works when the day calls for simple Z2 and no drama. The town covers 68 km and gains 56 m, so it has enough roll for honest intervals. Sumter Speed Cross Country trains around Sumter from September to October, with races from 1k to 5k. Miles and Mortarboards 5K, Springdale 5K, and Run for the Heroes keep the anchor-race calendar familiar.

Cycling: Locals ride for distance more than climbs here. Sumter sits where the Sandhills, Pee Dee, and Lowcountry meet, so the roads feel like steady base miles instead of mountain work. The 2026 Gravel Battle of Sumter Forest gives riders a real anchor event, even though the race takes place in Whitmire. The long course runs 74 miles, the short course runs 49 miles, and the fun course runs 13 miles. The long course uses aid stations at Mile 21, 40, and 63. Sumter sits 175 miles east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, so the proper climbs live out there.

Season: March is the clean pick on the calendar. South Carolina temperatures are perfect in March for Gravel Battle of Sumter Forest, and that lines up well for runners building toward spring 5Ks. Summer specifics stay simple in the brief, so locals should treat it as maintenance season and keep the work honest. Winter changes are not pinned with dates here, but Sumter Speed Cross Country has already rolled through fall, and runners can still keep short routes like Shaw AFB Track in the mix. Cyclists can stay on Z2 roads and save gran fondo legs for March.
