WILMA Dash

The WILMA Dash is Wilmington, North Carolina’s only all-female 5K, presented by WILMA Magazine and based at the Wilmington Convention Center. It is a timed race, but walkers are welcome, and the event also offers a virtual 5K option. The setup makes it approachable for first-time runners and walkers while still giving faster runners a chance to chase a personal best. The course starts and finishes at the Convention Center, then runs through historic downtown Wilmington with views of the Battleship, the bridges, and the Riverfront. It is stroller-friendly, so the field can include parents and casual participants as well as club runners. After the 5K, runners can go inside the Convention Center’s Expo Hall for the Health Fest, with local health and wellness exhibitors, food, drinks, awards, and a charity tie to the Alzheimer’s Association. Awards cover overall women, masters runners, age groups, and teams, including Most Spirited Team and Largest Team.

Southeastern NC Middle School XC Series

Southeastern North Carolina middle schoolers have three fall cross country races at Long Leaf Park in Wilmington, each covering 2 miles. This series is designed for developing athletes needing consistent competition, not just a single event. It welcomes public schools, private schools, clubs, teams, and unattached runners. Each race includes JV, varsity girls, and varsity boys divisions. JV boys and girls run together unless the number of participants requires a split. Varsity teams may enter up to 15 runners. Pierre Timing manages the results, and Without Limits organizes the events. The top 10 boys, top 10 girls, and the top two teams at each meet receive awards, allowing runners to aim for individual recognition while teams monitor their progress throughout the brief fall season.

Azalea Sprint Triathlon

The Azalea Sprint Triathlon is a short-course multisport race held at UNCW in Wilmington, North Carolina. Participants swim 300 yards, bike 12 miles, and run 5K. Options include racing solo, as a relay team, or as an aquabike entrant who bypasses the run. The event is open to ages 10 and up, suitable for newer triathletes, younger competitors, and adults seeking a brief race morning rather than a long-distance commitment. Race morning begins with waves, starting the first group at 8:00 am, with the last finisher anticipated around lunchtime. Athletes may complete a pre-swim in the dive pool, collect timing chips outside transition, and choose packet pickup on Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. Bikes cannot be stored overnight. Awards are distributed based on start group, and the event is part of the North Carolina Triathlon Series.

About cycling & running in Wilmington

Wilmington Coastal Miles

Running: The River Road trail runs 75 miles beside the Cape Fear River. The River Road trail has 8 miles with good shade. The outer loop is 55 miles. Runners do 5 miles when they want ocean breeze without beach sand. Wilmington Road Runners Club handles the weekly group-run rhythm. YMCA Tri-Span 5K, 10K, WILMA Dash, and Novant Health Wilmington NC Marathon anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Local riders use the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail for 15 miles of base miles across town. The River to Sea Bikeway gives cyclists an 11-mile on- and off-road route toward the beach. at 6:00 PM, rolling at 6:15 PM, and riders of all levels are invited. Cape Fear Triathlon Club and Cape Fear SORBA keep the tri, singletrack, and mountain bike crowd connected. Blue Clay Park gives mountain bikers an 8-mile trail system. The climb runs 3 km with 342 m of elevation gain.

Season: Spring from late February to early May gives runners and riders the cleanest training window. Autumn gives the city another strong block for intervals, long runs, and Z2 rides. Summer brings high humidity, and daily highs usually sit in the upper 80s to lower 90s °F, or 31–34 °C. Greenfield Lake Park and Halyburton Park matter more in summer because very little sun reaches the path on the loop. Winter keeps training alive with January highs in the mid-50s °F, or about 12 °C. Locals swap heat planning for layers, steadier pacing, and easier weekday miles.
