Opale Gravel - Hames-Boucres

Opale Gravel uses a 12.5 km gravel circuit in Hames-Boucres, Pas-de-Calais, near Calais. The event offers three race distances based on category: 37.5 km for U15, 62.5 km for U17 and older, and 100 km for U19, senior, and Master 40+ categories. Women’s categories are included, accommodating everyone from new racers to seasoned riders maintaining consistent laps. The circuit is straightforward yet demanding, with 3, 5, or 8 laps. Pacing and clean riding become increasingly important as the distance increases. Start, finish, bib collection, and medical checks are centralized at Rue de l’Eglise, simplifying race-day logistics. UVC Calais organizes the event. Helmets are mandatory, mountain bikes are permitted, but electric bikes are not. Riders require a racing license or a medical certificate for competitive cycling. On-course assistance and refuelling are permitted. Litter must be disposed of within a 200 m collection zone, and the race convoy is managed with opening and closing quads.

La Cal'lys Gravel

La Cal'lys Gravel begins at Base Tom Souville in Sangatte, on the Pas-de-Calais coast of northern France, scheduled for late April. It is a non-timed gravel ride, not a race against the clock, offering four distance options: 80 km, 120 km, 200 km, and 300 km. The routes traverse the Opal Coast and its inland countryside, within the Caps et Marais d'Opale Regional Natural Park. Le Lys Calais Triathlon organizes the event, with a deliberately social atmosphere. New courses may emerge, but the core concept remains true to the motto, “Ride far, ride free!”

About cycling & running in Calais

Calais Coastal Training Notes

Running: Locals run the seafront first, then cut through Old Town or St. Pierre when they want urban miles. The Marck Canal gives steady Z2 without much fuss. The Marck Canal loop is 21 km when you want a clean nearby route. Stade Olympique Calais Athlétisme keeps the groupe running moving on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays from Stade du Souvenir. The Sunday running forme group runs from 10h to 11h. Urban trail de Calais, Le Marathon Calais XXL, Trail Des Forteresses De Calais, and Calais Beach Race are the anchor events.

Cycling: Riders use Calais as a flat coastal base with enough options for base miles, gravel, and a tidy crit-style hit around town. The Forts Loop runs 11 kilometers, and the Coulogne-Guines cycle route runs 7 kilometers. The Coquelles Green Belt runs nearly 7 kilometers, and the Marck Canal path rolls peacefully for nearly two kilometers. Calais sits at the crossroads of EuroVelo routes 4, 5, and 12. La Ronde de Calais reaches up to 150 km, so it works as the big gran fondo day. Cape Blanc Nez and Cape Gris Nez hold the nearby climbs.

Season: Calais gives you a coastal season, so locals plan around wind more than altitude. Spring and autumn feel best for steady running, long rides, intervals, and cyclocross prep. Summer puts the English Channel right in your face, and the White Cliffs of Dover show from Calais on a clear day. The beaches, dunes, and canal paths make warm Z2 easy if you start smart. Winter keeps both sports going, but the city shifts toward shorter loops, club sessions, urban routes, and sheltered canal work. La Nocturne de Noël keeps the late-year running mood alive.
