Semi Marathon du Carnaval

The Semi Marathon du Carnaval is a city road race in Dunkerque, offering a 21.0975 km half marathon and a 5 km option. Both adult distances feature single-loop courses, ensuring runners do not repeat the same short circuit. The event includes races for children and juniors, contributing to a broader race-day atmosphere beyond just a half marathon. It is linked to the carnival season, presented as a festive urban run instead of a basic club race. The route crosses Dunkerque’s streets, with spectators and the carnival atmosphere enhancing its appeal. The surrounding region has strong carnival traditions: Cassel, a nearby town, hosts both a winter Mardi Gras carnival and a larger Easter Monday carnival, marked by early morning drum-and-cymbal calls and afternoon or evening processions. This regional context helps frame the race around color, noise, and broad participation, accommodating serious runners, casual participants, juniors, and families within the same event.

Open VTT Dunes de Flandres

The Open VTT Dunes de Flandres is a sand-based mountain bike race in Dunkerque, on France's northern coast. Participants select between 33.5 km or 50 km distances, with the sand itself being the defining characteristic: the beach provides sand under the wheels rather than typical forest tracks or hard-packed trails. It is designed for mountain bike enthusiasts seeking a more challenging, exposed effort by the sea. The course follows the beaches of the North, in a location where the land meets the Channel coast. The event attracts riders aiming to test themselves against competitors and manage the resistance, changing grip, and physical sensation of riding on sand. Dunkerque offers a maritime setting, with the Musée Portuaire nearby for those interested in the region's port history, and Lille and the Caps et Marais d'Opale regional park are accessible for extending the race trip into a wider exploration of Hauts-de-France.

About cycling & running in Dunkirk

Dunkerque Coastal Training Notes

Running: Locals run the littoral first, because Dunkerque gives you dunes, city paths, beaches, and the digue without much fuss. Richard from Club Athlétic de Coudekerque Branche shares his best circuits on the coast, with short loops that stay accessible and away from traffic. La dynamorun keeps the local story sharp with a course through dunes, old sites, city paths, and beaches. Boucles dunkerquoises and Urban Trail de Dunkerque give the calendar its anchor race feel. US Dunkerque Athlétisme and ELAN59 keep the club scene visible when base miles need company.

Cycling: Locals ride the maritime cycle path when they want steady coastal Z2. The French part of Eurovelo4 runs 53km from Grand-Fort-Philippe to Bray-Dunes and passes the seaside, dunes, and notable sites. The digue at Leffrinckoucke feels made for easy spins before intervals. Named cycling clubs do not show up here, so locals key off events instead. Open VTT Dunes de Flandres brings the dune-side VTT crowd. Randos Des Quatre Jours De Dunkerque, Four Days of Dunkirk, and Grand Prix des Hauts de France give the road calendar its anchor event. The climbs sit south on the roads, and To Brussels gains 804m over 164.419km.

Season: May, June, and September give Dunkerque its best training months. Summer keeps the work honest without cooking you, because high temperatures average around 20°C under the pull of marine currents. Locals use those months for longer coastal rides, sharper run sessions, and beach-side recovery miles. The city centre stays easy to reach, and free public transport helps when a point-to-point route makes more sense than an out-and-back. Winter stays cool, so runners lean into steady miles and cyclists choose protected coastal spins, VTT, or cyclocross-style sessions in the dunes.
