Marathon de la Rochelle Serge Vigot

The Marathon de la Rochelle Serge Vigot is a road marathon held annually in La Rochelle, on France’s Atlantic coast, run through the city’s streets since 1991. The marathon begins near the Old Port, with the city’s medieval towers nearby. The race weekend also features a 10 km race, a duo format, handisport races, and a corporate challenge. It is one of France’s largest marathons by finishers, typically attracting thousands of runners, and ranks second among French marathons for participation, behind Paris. The race holds French athletics labeling and an IAAF Bronze road-race label, attracting both serious marathoners and a large amateur field. The course is mostly flat, with two loops through the city center, parks, neighborhoods, and seaside sections offering views toward the Île de Ré. This loop format allows supporters to see runners multiple times, and La Rochelle residents attend in large numbers, with bands and orchestras positioned along the route. Founder Serge Vigot intended the race to feel popular, friendly, and festive, evident in traditions such as finisher medals, a pre-race pasta party, pacemakers, grandstands, and a marathon village for bib pickup. The race also has a practical history: it was the first French marathon to use electronic chip timing, and its “Clean Marathon” program introduced rolling trash bins, waste bags every kilometer, biodegradable cups at aid stations, and some electric race vehicles.

La Graveloise

La Graveloise offers riders three distance options — 40 km, 60 km, and 80 km — starting from La Rochelle on France’s Atlantic coast. This gravel cycling event takes place in late June in Charente-Maritime, within the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is not timed, emphasizing route selection and execution over chasing an official result. Road bikes are permitted, making the event more accessible than a gravel-specific setup. The routes feature park and nature sections near La Rochelle, with organizers hinting at rolling hills in the southwest rather than a simple seaside ride. Cyclo Rochelais 17 manages the event. This club, established in 1931, continues to organize road and gravel rides, local cycling events, trips, and support for beginners. The event reflects this club ethos: varied distances cater to competitive riders, regular cyclists, and casual participants, with refreshments provided during the rides and an emphasis on exploring the local area and French heritage. Post-ride, participants are near the Vieux-Port with its medieval towers, the Aquarium de La Rochelle, and Île de Ré, offering beaches and cycle paths approximately an hour away.

Urban Trail la Rochelle

Urban Trail La Rochelle is an early-January city trail in La Rochelle, on France’s Atlantic coast in Charente-Maritime. Runners choose either 6 km or 12 km, with the 12 km listed as the more popular option. It is a short-format urban race rather than a mountain trail, so the appeal is in running through the city while still getting a taste of the coast. The route uses La Rochelle’s historic streets and coastal landscapes, giving runners a compact tour of the old port city at race pace. The event is aimed at runners of all levels, and the shorter distance makes it workable for families, couples, newer runners, and people who want a relaxed winter race with a bit of local discovery built in.

About cycling & running in La Rochelle

La Rochelle Training Notes

Running: Locals run early because La Rochelle feels best before the walkers fill the seafront. The Les Minimes loop gives you 7 km with boats moving in and out of the bay. The Minimes - Aytré route stretches to 9 km when you want steady Z2 by the ocean. The Rompsay Canal route runs 15 km from Rompsay Bridge to Dompierre-sur-Mer. Parc Franck Delmas has 5 km loops, and Bois des Coureilles gives 5 to 12 km when you want dirtier legs. RUN ACCUEIL LA ROCHELLE handles weekday sessions and Sunday runs. Marathon de la Rochelle Serge Vigot anchors the year, with Urban Trail la Rochelle, Run des pertuis - La Rochelle, and La Sarabande des filles de La Rochelle close behind.

Cycling: Locals ride because La Rochelle is bike heaven, especially when you arrive sans vélo and grab a Yélo. Yélo puts over 350 bikes onto a 150 km cyclable network, so base miles start right in town. La Vélodyssée takes you 50 km from La Rochelle to Rochefort in about 3 hours and 20 minutes. The route keeps things honest with 10 m of ascents, 11 m of descents, and a high point of 20 m. The climbs are basically not the story here. Cyclo Rochelais, created in 1931, runs road and gravel outings from Parking Lycée professionnel Rompsay. La Graveloise gives the gravel crowd an anchor event.

Season: Spring and autumn are the sweet spot, with mild weather and high insolation for both intervals and long Z2. Summers are warm, dry, and sunny, so locals start early, then let the path get busy with walkers while the beaches at La Rochelle, Aytré, and Châtelaillon-Plage fill up. Winter stays mild and wet, so you can keep running through the Old Harbour, Gabut, Saint-Nicolas, and the canal. Cyclo Rochelais still rides in winter, with Sunday road departures at 9:30 AM in January and December and gravel at 9:00 AM through the colder months.
