Marathon de Vannes

The Marathon de Vannes begins near the old ramparts of Vannes, sending runners on a 42.195 km course through Brittany’s Morbihan region. This annual race typically takes place on the third Sunday of October. The marathon is the primary event, complemented by shorter races and team options. The weekend also features the 10KM Gwened Nocturne on Saturday evening, a two-person Duo de l’Hermine relay, a four-runner company relay, and shorter distances including 5 km and 20 km options. The marathon course consists of two loops, with over 20 km crossing coastal paths along the Golfe du Morbihan. Participants will pass Île de Conleau, the port, parklands, wooded areas, and the historic center before concluding at Kercado stadium. The event emphasizes local Breton culture, with musical groups performing samba, rock, jazz, and traditional Breton tunes. Regional food tastings, such as oysters and salted butter caramel, are available along the route. As part of the Festiviales group of French races, it offers a basket of oysters to costumed runners and has supported coastal protection efforts since 2013.

Vann'éco tour - Vannes

The Vann'éco tour is a small running event in Vannes, France, in the Morbihan department. Its date is listed for February, though it is still to be confirmed. The programme includes a 10 km race and a 1 km children's race, both scheduled to start at 10:00. The details suggest a local, club-style event rather than a large race weekend. A recent edition had 275 registered participants. The organiser is Vann eco Tour, which also shares information via a Facebook page.

L'Ultra Marin - Vannes

L'Ultra Marin is an annual trail running series around the Gulf of Morbihan in Brittany, held in late June or early July since 2005. The main race is a 175 km ultra starting and finishing in Vannes, with participants allotted 42 hours, including any stops. The event includes both amateurs and professionals, with entries capped at 1,000 for the main ultra and 10,000 overall to minimize impact on the coastal paths. The long course circles the gulf entirely on coastal trails. An organized ferry crosses between Locmariaquer and Arzon before the finish at the port of Vannes. The series also features a 100 km race from Arzon, a 56 km trail from Sarzeau, the 34 km Ronde des Douaniers from Séné, a 29 km Nordic walk from Séné, and a four-person relay on the 175 km route. While the distances are substantial, the elevation gain is moderate for trail running, distinguishing it from mountain ultras.

About cycling & running in Vannes

Vannes Training Notes

Running: The Promenade de la Rabine runs 5 km on stabilized path and small paved road. Parc du Golfe links Conleau and Vincin for 7 to 9 km when you want steady Z2 with water views. The Sentier des Douaniers runs 4 km and gains 66 m. L'Étang au Duc gives beginners a 2 km pond promenade, and Parc de la Garenne gives short 1 to 2 km loops with stairs and sloped paths. ASPTT Vannes CAP-MS is the local run-club name. Marathon de Vannes, L'Ultra Marin, Trail des Remparts Vannes, and Corrida de Vannes anchor the year.

Cycling: Riders point south because the Presqu'île de Rhuys sits about 20 km from Vannes and gives the best coastal base miles. The Littorale V45 runs 44 km from Vannes to Port-Navalo, and the route keeps 29 km on cycle paths with 15 km on road. The Vannes to Port-Navalo line includes 62 m of ascents and reaches 41 m, so the climbs are short and punchy rather than mountain work. Locals use Vélocéa for town spins, Cycles Le Mellec for hire and repair, and Vannes OC as the club name to know. Vannes riders treat the Port-Navalo run like an anchor event when the calendar goes quiet.

Season: Spring is the best time here because Morbihan gives mild temperatures, longer days, and enough light for intervals after work. Summer changes the rhythm because L'Étang au Duc stays open until 10pm from June 1 to August 31, and locals get late laps before the air drops. The Gulf keeps every ride fresh because the islands, coves, season, and tides change the view every time. Winter moves runners toward Corrida de Vannes on December 27 and pushes cyclists onto steadier road spins, rougher paths, and honest Z2 when the coast feels sharper.
