Le Défi des Héros en Or

Le Défi des Héros en Or is a charity road race and walking event in Saint-Jean-le-Blanc, in the Loiret department of Centre-Val de Loire, France. Held in mid-September, it offers two distances: a 5 km loop and a 10 km loop, with the 5 km open to walkers. Its motto, “Deviens un héros” — “Become a hero” — reflects the event’s focus on using sport to support a charitable cause, rather than solely on race times. The route circles the lake at the Charlemagne leisure base, keeping runners and walkers on a contained local course. The 10 km consists of one full 10 km loop, while the 5 km uses a shorter loop. This setup provides clear options for both runners and walkers. Following the race, participants are directed to nearby attractions such as Château de Chambord, Parc Floral de la Source, the Musée des Beaux-Arts d’Orléans, and the Forêt d’Orléans, connecting the day to the Orléans area and the fundraising objective.

Triathlon de l'île Charlemagne

Triathlon de l'île Charlemagne is the former name for the race weekend now called Triathlon et Bike & Run du Parc de Loire. Organized by Orléans Asfas Triathlon at the Île Charlemagne leisure base near Orléans, the main triathlon program takes place over a May weekend. It features cross-triathlon XS, S, and M formats, with road-bike courses for the S and M races. Options include individual entries, relay teams, youth races, children’s races, and a corporate challenge. The Bike & Run du Parc de Loire, held in winter, is part of the same event family, preserving the Île Charlemagne identity under a new name. The race is set on a 70-hectare leisure site on the left bank of the Loire, accessible by a footbridge and separated from the mainland by a river arm. The site includes four ponds, a 29-hectare lake, two marked swimming areas, running routes, bike-park facilities, and the Loire à Vélo cycle route. Participants range from club triathletes and relay groups to company teams, juniors, and families. A substantial volunteer team supports the event; one recent edition involved 140 volunteers, with organizers also enlisting motorcyclists for officials and photographers. The island has been a leisure spot since the late 1800s and later developed into a municipal outdoor sports base.

About cycling & running in Orléans

Orléans Training Notes

Running: The Loire à Vélo loop runs 40 km with +6 m when you just need steady Z2. Parc Floral de la Source, Jardin des Plantes, and Pasteur park get the easy laps. Parc Anjorrant stays more insider, and locals like it because it feels original and still a bit tucked away. The Parc Anjorrant loop runs 07 km with +33 m for longer base miles. You can push it to 63 km with +140 m when the day is serious. Foulées d'Orléans, Course des trois ponts, and Le Défi des Héros en Or anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride from the Loire, because Orléans starts the Loire à vélo and that route runs 900 km. The Loire keeps the miles honest, wild, and beautiful. The Blois to Orléans section gives 73 km, and the Orléans to Nevers section gives 230 km for bigger legs. Beauce and Orléans Forest sit north of the river, so locals look there for the small hill and the firmer training feel. Sologne sits south, and the Loiret runs through that side. RC Orléans, US Orléans, and Orléans Loiret Basket are the club names in the brief. Sur les Pas de Raboliot BRM gives the ride calendar its anchor.

Season: April to October works best for cycling, and June and September feel like the cleanest training months. July and August bring the warmest days, with average temperatures of 18°C and highs of 23°C. The city gets 0 hours of sunshine on average, so locals push longer Z2 rides early and keep intervals sensible. Summer humidity sits at 72%, and runners use the Loire, parks, and shaded garden loops. January changes the rhythm with an average temperature of 5°C and an average low of 2°C. January gets 9 hours of sunshine on average, so winter becomes base miles, cyclocross legs, and shorter runs.
