Halve van Haarlem

The Run2Day Halve van Haarlem starts and finishes on the Grote Markt, Haarlem's main square in Noord-Holland. This paved road race takes place in September, featuring a half marathon of 21.1 km as its longest distance. The event also offers 10 km and 5 km races, a Business Run for corporate teams, and children's races: the KidsRun and the Kabouterloop (Gnome Run). The half marathon route departs the city center, passes through Haarlem neighborhoods, and enters the green, dune-filled areas surrounding the city, with some descriptions noting dunes and forest. SportSupport Kennemerland, through Stichting SportSupport Kennemerland / KP45 and affiliated with the Atletiekunie, organizes the race. The participant limit is 10,000, allowing for a substantial field without the scale of a massive city marathon. Amenities on race day include changing areas, massage, first aid, a supervised cloakroom, and public transport access. A previous adjustment to the start location has provided space for expansion.

Yu Man Race Half Marathon

The Yu Man Race Half Marathon is a September trail race held in Haarle, a village in Overijssel, Netherlands. The race takes place in the forests of Hellendoorn, offering participants two distance options: a 10 km quarter-marathon or the full 21 km half marathon. The course follows unpaved forest paths through the Sallandse Heuvelrug woodlands. It emphasizes steady trail running rather than mud pits or climbing walls. This event is not an obstacle run; participants choose it for a natural course without constructed obstacles, whether they opt for the shorter off-road race or the half marathon on forest terrain.

Valouwe Trail

The Valouwe Trail is a guided 25 km trail run near Lunteren, featuring 100 meters of elevation gain and starting close to the NS railway station. It is part of the Saturday Sessions program, a collection of single-day running events, trail explorations, and skill clinics designed to lead up to this longer run in August. The pace is maintained between 6:00 and 6:30 minutes per kilometer, making it a communal group run rather than a competition focused on maximum speed. The course winds through the natural landscapes of the Lunteren region, with scheduled pauses for rest, photos, and recovery. Group sizes are limited to 8-20 participants, and both members and non-members are welcome to attend upon prior registration. The event concludes informally, with coffee, tea, and homemade apple pie offered from the back of the organizer's vehicle.

About cycling & running in Haarlem

Haarlem Base Miles By The Dunes

Running: Locals run the Spaarne when they want simple Z2 without thinking too hard. The Spaarne river gives you 5 km or 10 km on asphalt under your shoes. Nationaal Park Zuid-Kennemerland and the Kennemerduinen are the better call when you want small ups and downs in the legs. Bloemendaal aan Zee and Parnassia make beach running feel like a holiday. 023 Runclub meets every Sunday at 9:30 AM in Frederikspark. Tante Trail runs every Saturday at 10:00 AM with 5 or 10 km loops. Urban Trail Haarlem, Grachtenloop Haarlem, and Halve van Haarlem are the local anchor races.

Cycling: Locals ride from the city centre through dunes, polder, and canal edges when they want base miles with a bit of bite. The loop is 5 km with 552 m elevation. The Spaarne River Loop and Kennemerduinen Path are easy staples. Dasia Racing Team is the Haarlem club name you hear first. HSC de Bataaf gives racers training races and that proper crit feel. The climbs sit around Spaarnwoude and the Kopje van Bloemendaal. The route mix has gravel, cobbles, smooth asphalt, and enough short punches for intervals.

Season: May through September is the good block here. Summer gives daytime highs around 18-24°C, and locals use the coastal breezes and dune paths for steady Z2, evening runs, and long rides after dinner. The beach and Bloemendaal aan Zee feel best when the legs are tired but the head wants space. Winter temperatures often sit around 0-8°C. December daylight can shrink to 7-8 hours, so runners stay closer to the Spaarne, Haarlemmerhout, or Randweg. Cycling has to wait more often, unless the day opens up clean and dry.
