Leiden Marathon

The Leiden Marathon takes runners from the historic Dutch university city into the flat Green Heart countryside, with the full race covering the standard 42.195 km. Held annually in Leiden and the surrounding area since 1991, the event also offers a half marathon, 10 km, 5 km, and a 2 km kids run. The full marathon has a six-hour limit, updated from an earlier five-hour cutoff, making it suitable for serious runners while still allowing ordinary marathoners a realistic finishing window. The marathon route is now a single loop, beginning in Leiden’s historic center and proceeding through nine nearby villages. Runners encounter a distinctly Dutch middle section: polders, windmills, open farmland, and cows, instead of a closed city circuit. The longer running routes, excluding the kids run and 5 km, are certified by the Atletiekunie. Walkers can also follow the official full, half, and 10 km routes on Saturday. African runners typically win the marathon, while local history includes Jaroslav Lewandowski’s four victories and Agnes Hijman’s six consecutive women’s wins, earning her the title “Miss Leiden Marathon.”

Urban Trail Leiden

Urban Trail Leiden is a city run held in Leiden, South Holland, offering routes of approximately 5-6 km and 10-12 km. It is designed as a fun run, not a competitive race. Participants run at their own pace through the historic center, incorporating streets, squares, buildings, and hidden spots into the course. The event takes place on a Sunday in June and can accommodate up to 3,000 participants. The appeal lies in the course passing through or inside locations not typically accessible during a run, such as sites connected with Rijksmuseum Boerhaave and Hortus Botanicus. The route utilizes public roads, meaning runners share the space with traffic, other road users, and the urban environment. The event is affiliated with the Atletiekunie and supports KWF Cancer Control via the Ren tegen kanker campaign. Participants can collect sponsorship funds and receive a campaign shirt upon meeting their fundraising goal.

100 Bruggenloop

The 100 Bruggenloop, held in late September in Leiden, centers on a straightforward concept: the longest course involves crossing one hundred bridges. Participants can walk on Saturday or run on Sunday, choosing from 19.5 km, 12 km, and 8 km routes on paved city paths. Runners begin at Stadhuisplein / Vismarkt, while walkers start from Van der Werfpark. The course winds through Leiden’s historic core, utilizing its bridges, canals, rivers, towpaths, and singels instead of a conventional road course. The main challenge on the long route is the repeated bridge crossings, totaling one hundred ascents and descents within the old city. Along the way, participants will see the nation's oldest university, the Hortus Botanicus, Singelpark, two harbors, city gates, industrial landmarks, and a modern architectural zone. Though the event is relatively new, with only a few editions completed, its unique bridge-crossing theme provides a distinct character without relying on a mountain, trail, or stadium finish.

About cycling & running in Leiden

Leiden Base Miles

Running: Locals run the singels, the Oude Rijn edges, and the tight city centre when they want quick intervals without leaving town. Leiden Run Club starts free social runs every Sunday at 10:30 AM from De Morspoort, with coffee after. Stichting We Run The City keeps the training steady in Leiden. The city centre gives you bridges, stones, corners, and that proper zweet op de kop feeling. The race calendar offers 195 km total. 100 Bruggenloop, Singelloop Leiden, Glibbertreel Leiden, Zorg en Zekerheid Circuit, and Leidse Houtloop keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Locals ride out fast because pedal power just works here. Swift-Leiden is the straight club option, and Raas rolls social rides every Thursday around 19:00h. Keytown cruisers gives the group-ride fix when solo Z2 starts getting boring. The Dune & Sea Route gives 33 km through Leiden, Wassenaar, and Katwijk, with North Sea air only 8 km from town. The Dune Region gives the nearest climbs, and the dunes reach 25 metres when you want something more than flat base miles. The Mills & More Route passes 20 windmills over 34.8 km. The Trekvaart route works the waterways of Leiden and Oegstgeest. The Limes Matilo route gives 15 km through Archeologisch Park Matilo.

Season: South Holland works best in April-June and September-October, when legs come around and the calendar feels full. Spring gives 12-20°C days, and late April brings the Bollenstreek peak between Haarlem and Leiden. Leiden summer is long enough for evening intervals, easy spins to Katwijk, and heat-aware runs where locals watch heart rate and carry a water-and-salt plan. Early autumn gives 20-22°C days, which is perfect for gran fondo pace without drama. Winter changes the rhythm for both sports. The Netherlands often sits at 0-8°C in winter, and December can shrink daylight to 7-8 hours, so locals keep it short, steady, and close to home.
